The spirit is the reality that endures
I read this as an alternate reality, sci-fi novel. Not many non-sci-fi novels would mention squaring the circle and other mathematical concepts. The main character is a prisoner in solitary about to be hanged. He escapes. Well, he escapes into past lives, because, โthe spirit is the reality that endures.โ And these alternate realities are perhaps the best parts of the book. They are great adventure stories with lots of action, as one would expect of London. Back in solitary, inside a straight jacket, you canโt expect much action. This is where London provides plausible philosophical and scientific explanations for how the hero manages to separate his consciousness from his body. It is also where he makes his case against society and the brutality of the prisons of the day. This e-book had many typos, which was distracting. Try another version.

The Star Rover
The Star Rover is unknown compared to Londons other works but this is an amazing book. A straight jacketed prisoner is brutalized and basicly left in the dark in solitary confinement, wills himself to learn astral projection, and relives past lives from previous incarnations. Very unique book that is unlike anything else Jack London wrote. Although the theme of struggle, defiance, strength of spirit and willpower are one of the main themes in The Star Rover as in most of Londons other work, but even that aspect is different in the sense that the main character achieves his victory by giving up and willing himself to leave this existence. You will find no bigger lover of Jack London than me but even though this is very different than anything else he has written I hold it in just as high regard and consider it a classic. Besides recomending this to fans of Londons work I would recomend this to someone into science fiction, or anybody interested in astral projection, meditation or shamanism.

@@@Not the Typical London at all.Astral projection or poppy cock>!~~!<
One of the most amazing and remarkable books ever written by a known author . At best a sleeper classic. Was researched very well for his time and place In those days. Deals with true human nature In It's highest form. The outfit cruelty of the California state penal systems way of dealing with prisoners and the authors brilliance of bringing there true nature as humans and mans concept of mind ,matter & time reality Is truly a tribute to us all as people existing In this conscious realm. It Is drawn from lecture from the released Inmates and there forums to bring a heart felt statement and story based on there accounts. Not your typical "London" at all. Go for It

Disappointing
The story was excellent but the printing of this edition was pathetic. For a 100th anniversary edition it should have been something special, not disappointing and difficult to read.

Star Rover - will take you places !
This is one of Jack London's best works in my opinion. Trapped in solitary Confinement, in the dark, he shines a light onto true literary genius and gives us multiple and fascinating tales- that endeavor to teach us about the spirituality of our souls. There is a lot for our mind's teeth to chew on here.

I loved this book
I loved this book. It's an easy read but very well-written. About a man who is tortured in prison and learns to leave his body to relieve his suffering. While out-of-body, he regresses to past lives that he has lived. Very gripping and entertaining.

Great book, poorly produced.
Great book poorly produced. You would think that it had been translated into an exotic language and then translated back into English by someone who didn't know the language. Sometimes you can't even make sense of the words. Obviously a computer was used to edit. The words are there, but not used in the correct context. VERY frustrating. I will keep an eye out for this publisher and know to avoid in the future.

How many lives to live?
One of my favorite books! A blend of the Struggles of Life stories from the ages, with a mix of plausible history truths mixed in. Jack Londonโs story telling at his best!

A must read
However, this version has a lot of typographical errors in it and you have to get past that.As Darrell standing suffers on death row his mind triumphs over matter as he transcends bodily pain. He travels through many lives and both mentally and philosophically defeats his captors. A moving account of a death row experience. Especially as set in the early 20th century and his charges are dubious.

Another outstanding London novel
Bought this as a random London book, that I'd never heard about, and yet again I was suprised by how brilliantly written and engaging the story was. It's also a unusual story for the time, it wouldn't be out of place if written today, in fact they'd probably make a film out of it, most likely starring Christian Bale.Anyway, excellent read, just a shame I finished it in one sitting
