Box-set containing three popular John Wayne westerns. In 'The Alamo' (1960), a group of 187 Americans, led by Colonels William Travis (Laurence Harvey), Davey Crockett (Wayne) and Jim Bowie (Richard Widmark) battle to hold off Santa Anna's army of 7,000. 'The Horse Soldiers' (1959) sees Wayne play hardbitten Union Cavalry Colonel Marlowe, who teams up with a pacifist doctor (William Holden) in this Civil War western directed by John Ford. Together with a feisty Southern belle (Constance Towers), the pair lead a cavalry patrol on a mission 300 miles into Confederate territory, in an attempt to destroy a railroad junction and choke off vital supply lines. Finally, in 'Red River' (1948), Tom Dunson (Wayne) and his adopted son (Montgomery Clift) lead the cattle train which establishes the Chisholm Trail. However, father and son argue when it comes to bringing law and order to the Wild West; Tom is tied to an authoritarian approach, whilst his son favours a more liberal stance, refusing to resort to the law of the gun.

Variable quality but a decent price
The Alamo looks good. Red River has a thin white line on the side of the image, which is otherwise perfectly acceptable. (Easy to ignore but it's there.) The Horse Soldiers has a soft but colourful image. (Didn't mind because I only bought it for one scene.) I picked this package up for a shade over 5 pounds, so I am absolutely not complaining. But real fans might want to go looking for blu-ray versions.

A must for Wayne fans.
We know the films. On transfer quality, THE ALAMO gets a thumbs up from DVD reviewers. They say RED RIVER has its problems with an overall good look. What prompted this purchase was curiosity regarding THE HORSE SOLDIERS. Critics say it's a visual mess.ALAMO looks and sounds really good, like you are on stage with these flag-waving right-wingers. Covers up a lot of the political incorrectness and makes for terrific entertainment.RIVER is a classic, and after the first 10 minutes, most imperfections are gone. Watching Montgomery Cliff mount his horse is always an eye-opener.SOLDIERS was a surprise. It ain't horrible. The film itself is no masterpiece, but it is John Ford. The print looks slightly soft and there is some wear. But once things get going, there's no trouble watching.

Excellent Value
I just like Westerns and although I had seen them on TV just had to buy these discs. They were already used discs but good quality as advertised and for the price paid are excellent value for money.

A good trilogy of films
A good trilogy of films, the Alamo in particular is a classic with John Wayne and Richard Widmark at their best.

Nice triple set for te price.
As said in review title you can't really go wrong for the price 3 really good outings for the Duke on offer here.Red River is considered one of the truly great Westerns ever made so probably worth getting this set for that film alone.Horse Soldiers is pretty much a stock outing for Wayne but a nice little story all the same. The Alamo, this is the one I'm disappointed in Why Oh Why didn't they put the Full length Directors Cut out, I know it extends the film by quite a long way BUT its the version you struggle to find (especially in a region 2 format) SHAME.
