During the nineteenth century, Fanny, the illegitimate daughter of a British Cabinet Minister, begins a new life as a lady's maid in the household of her real father. She eventually learns the truth of her parentage and develops a strong bond with her father. This is shattered when his wife learns of it and threatens to publicly disgrace him. Fanny is in danger of losing him, but also of finding herself with another man in her life. His noble birth and her apparent lack of it put obstacles in the path of their romance, but will true love triumph?

The reviews here seem to be for two different versions. I found this one mesmerizing. The acting was excellent. James Mason plays the 'evil man' so well. Phyllis Calvert is beyond compare, as is Stewart Granger. From the reviews, I would never buy the BBC version- sounds horrible! But this 'Gainsborough Pictures' movie is such a fine melodrama and it has a happy ending! And this version by vci Entertainment (The Rank) has subtitles! Subtitles are invaluable to me, so I don't have to miss parts of the dialogue (which make substance of the movie).

Poor transfer
The story is okay, but this is a poor transfer, often very dark and there is a long blank space into the movie to change reels I suppose.

Not a lot of grit
Not a lot of grit in this movie that probably appeals most to women. I can`t understand why they chose this title which has very little to do with the story.

beware! this rental looks like a bootleg
this doesn't seem like a full screen official print for rent. strange boxing on left and right. quality is horrible. not talking lost big bucks in your rental fee, just be forewarned that you'll be sorely disappointed as a true Gainsborough film fan. very blurry.

I loved the book so much I bought this DVD but ...
I loved the book so much I bought this DVD but was terribly disappointed. The film was nowhere near as good as the book, plot lines were changed and they even changed the ending. Buy the book.
