Based on The Making of a Modern Exorcist, journalist Matt Baglio's non-fiction account of 21st Century Vatican exorcism training, The Rite follows a young, tragically disillusioned seminary student named Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue, The Tudors) who travels to Rome, despite his waning faith, to attend an exorcism school at the behest of his counselor, Father Matthew (Toby Jones, Frost/Nixon). Flawed with Clichรฉs and "been there done that", Yet Very Entertaining
Flawed with Clichรฉs and "been there done that", Yet Very Entertaining. As a fan of horror and Exorcist like films, I blind bought The Rite with hopes that it will creep me out and bring back that wild side of Anthony Hopkins, which has been dormant for years and years. Well, for the most part my hopes were met. The movie is very well directed and put together in such a way that it just flows and it is quite entertaining to the viewer. Anthony Hopkins is actually kind of a funny character. Though the movie is quite serious, there were many parts, more in the beginning, which had my friends and I chuckling. Anthony Hopkins plays a great character, which is very devout, however doesn't seem to care anymore. He has a quite different approach to the whole exorcism thing than others do and this is why a Michael, a young student who is teetering on dropping out of seminary, is sent to visit Father Lucas. Michael doubts Father Lucas's motives and abilities. Michael is searching for a more scientific or medical evidence approach and less leaning towards religion. The movie is very entertaining and fun to watch. A few parts will make you jump and squirm in your seat, but in the end it is nothing out of the ordinary for an exorcist like film and uses too many clichรฉs. The acting is great and everyone works quite well together. Anthony Hopkins eventually starts to play a very creepy role and will freak you out. Picture quality is perfect. There are some light scenes and many dark scenes and all look great. The audio is amazing. There are many little creaks and moans from the surrounds and the sounds and dialogue is crystal clear. The extras were decent with the deleted scenes, however the Alternate Ending was the best part. The Alternate Ending should have been left in the film, as well as some of the deleted scenes, which greatly would have helped with character development and over-all interest in the film. Over-all I should have Netflix'd The Rite and waited until it dropped to the $10 bin, however I blind bought it and I am sticking with it. It was very entertaining and I will watch it again. The over simplified clichรฉs started to get annoying and almost took the scariness away from the whole exorcist thing. It almost makes it seem like it is not as big a deal as it really is. I hated that aspect of the film. If you rent or buy this make sure you watch the Alternate Ending and the deleted scenes. I wish they were in the film however they made me appreciate the film a little more. Based on the deleted scenes it seems as though someone (director, producers, writer) wanted this film to go a little deeper and in a different direction than the movie actually turn out. However all in all it is a good film and a good purchase. It is re-watchable so I am glad I own it.

A Great Catholic Film About The Battle Between Exorcism Against Psychiatry
"The Rite" stars Anthony Hopkins and Colin O'Donoghue. The film was based on an American priest and exorcist Rev. Gary Thomas. It tells the story of a doubting seminarian or deacon Michael Kovak that was asked to train in exorcism with an eccentric Welsh priest, Father Lucas Trevant. This was one of the best exorcism movies that I have seen. In the film, we get to see the character development of Michael as he develops his Catholic faith as well as his vocation of being a Catholic priest during the process of his exorcism training. It has a lot of interesting themes about the demons, exorcisms, and the debate between faith and science. The film presents the fact that demons truly exists per 1 Peter 5:8-9. "Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour. Whom resist ye, strong in faith: knowing that the same affliction befalls your brethren who are in the world." -1 Peter 5:8-9 Also, we get to realize that exorcism rites was established by Jesus through the Catholic Church per Matthew 16:18 "And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." -Matthew 16:18 It was fascinating that the viewer gets to see the rituals, the prayers, and the trainings the exorcists go through at the Vatican. This exorcism training were definitely scripturally based per Matthew 10:1 and Luke 10:17-20. "And having called his twelve disciples together, he gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of diseases, and all manner of infirmities." -Matthew 10:1 "And the seventy-two returned with joy, saying: Lord, the devils also are subject to us in thy name. And he said to them: I saw Satan like lightning falling from heaven. Behold, I have given you power to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and upon all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall hurt you. But yet rejoice not in this, that spirits are subject unto you; but rejoice in this, that your names are written in heaven." - Luke 10:17-20. Also, we get to see real-life exorcisms like a little girl that was demon possessed which is similar to Acts 16:16-18 at the conclusion when the lead character Michael has truly solidified his Catholic faith when he performed the exorcism himself. "And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain girl, having a pythonical spirit, met us, who brought to her masters much gain by divining. This same following Paul and us, cried out, saying: These men are the servants of the most high God, who preach unto you the way of salvation. And this she did many days. But Paul being grieved, turned, and said to the spirit: I command thee, in the name of Jesus Christ, to go out from her. And he went out the same hour." - Acts 16:16-18 Together with all that, we also get to see the battle between exorcism against psychiatry which happens to be the overall theme of the movie that was presented extremely well throughout the story of the film. It truly presents the presence of the demonic possession wherein the evil spirit exists that can only be healed by deliverance prayer and exorcism in comparison with psychiatric illness which was scripturally based per 1 Corinthians 12:10. "To another, faith in the same spirit; to another, the grace of healing in one Spirit; To another, the working of miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, the discerning of spirits; to another, diverse kinds of tongues; to another, interpretation of speeches." -1 Corinthians 12:10 The final scene when Fr. Michael Kovak hears a Confession truly presented the message that the clergy has been provided by Jesus to forgive another person's sin. The sacrament of Reconciliation shows that it is the primary form of exorcism when the priest absolves a person's sin per John 20:22-23. "When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost. Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained." -John 20:22-23. It was a great Catholic movie. Highly recommended to increase one's faith and to obtain awareness in the presence of the demons and its evil especially in a spiritually starved world marked by greed, materialism, and lust.
