Boost your vocabulary!
I picked up this book since I have never had any instruction in Latin and often feel confused when I come across certain phrases in my reading.First of all, I was surprised at how much Latin we (English speakers) use on a regular basis: Carpe diem, magnum opus, memorabilia, modus operandi, post partum, rigor mortis, status quo, etc. Then there are phrases I was familiar with, but less certain of their meaning: Annus mirabalis (year of wonders), caveat (let him beware), Deus ex machina (a contrived or artificial solution), habeas corpus (you must have a body), and mea culpa (it's not my fault)Second, any word lover will enjoy seeing the origins of many of our English words. From "nihil" (nothing) we get Nihilism. From "vide" (see) we get video, etc.Third, the author throws in quite a few hilarious phrases to keep things light: "Certe, toto, sentio nos in kansate non iam adesse." (You know, Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore), "Balaenae nobis conservandae sunt!" (Save the whales!), and "Luke sum ipse patrem te" (Luke, I am your father.)This is a quick, fun read. It will make you feel more educated. After all, "Quid quid latine dictum sit, altum videtur." (Anything said in Latin sounds profound.)

Latin Phrases - A Good Resource
I think I learned more from this book than from an entire four years of Latin classes in school (mind you she was a pretty average teacher). I stand in awe of Dr Harry Jay's knowledge of these Latin phrases, some of which will come in very handy when navigating through medical documents, or for impressing your friends! This is a valuable resource rather than a book to read right through.Since the English language has evolved largely from Latin, this book can also improve your appreciation of English and will notice the similarity of certain words.I very much liked 101 ways of saying I love/like you in as many different languages! My only regret is that I cannot access any live links to take advantage of the wonderful list of resources in the back of the book as I don't have access to WiFi. However I copied down the link to the library - certainly glad I did!

Do ut Des
I once chaired an ad hoc committee and didn't know how to spell it! Latin is one of those languages I wish I had taken the time to learn, but honestly feared it. Teachers are told to teach latin to their students so they become better decoders of the English language, but there are no resources to easily do this...until now. Dr. Jay cleverly listed latin phrases into meaningful quotes we have all seen or heard at one time. It is organized much like a dictionary and this reference book makes learning some Latin a great bit of fun.

This handy guide by Dr. Harry Jay covers all of the phrases you are likely to encounter in business and finance. This is a great little reference book that everyone should have on their book shelf. You can't help but come away knowing and understanding more about the words you encounter on a regular basis. Excellent reference and well worth the price.

Ad Referendum!
Never enjoyed Latin more than when shuffling through this book of Latin phrases! Oh, so clever!! Found myself chuckling out loud as I thumbed through some of the more obscure phrases which are alphabetically arranged. I'm planning to use this reference as I write my blog and facebook posts. This book is one that will be used over and over and over again.Elvis abiit, excessit, evasit, erupit (loosely translated - Elvis has left the building)!

Useful Latin phrase book
Latin Phrases is a very useful book to keep on your iPad or iPhone for all those times you wished you'd known what a Latin phrase meant. And it's surprising how many times Latin phrases turn up in books, business, and my favourite cryptic crosswords.
