Hard to get better than this
I haven't known about this band long, but so far, I've loved everything I've heard. It's hard for me to classify their style of music... The lead singer sounds a bit like the lead singer from Snow Patrol. But when it comes to instrumentation, it's hard to find a good comparison. Many of the songs incorporate horns, which is rare for a rock band. No two songs sound the same, yet there's a thread woven through the entirety of the album. When I first started listening to Pink Floyd, I was struck by how much I wanted to listen to the entire album at once, rather than just a track or two. With Typhoon, I get that same feeling. Don't put this album on shuffle -- it's perfect the way it is.Sometimes it's hard to find a band that can deliver on both music and lyrics, but Typhoon succeeds here as well. The lyrics are not just a series of words thrown together; they actually say something. And often, what they say is rather deep. Take "Kitchen Tile," for instance:You don't want to waste what's left of your lifeTrying to stay aliveFor just a little whileOr even better, the song "Summer Home":My little sister, I was two,The year that you were born and Ben came after youWe all three shared gentle youthOur mother combed our hair, our father cleaned our woundsThen a small thing happened, or sunk its toothAnd I was left behind, in different shapes you moveIn my peripheral sight I reach out for youBut when I turn my head I’m in an empty roomA faceless clock, the hands unmovedBut for a layer of dust, a cobweb or twoIn a broken mirror I see my broken truthsNow when I comb my hair, I pull the gray ones looseYou really can't go wrong with these guys. Any album is a good choice. Simply put: it's music that sticks with you.

Folkestra
As a writer of novels, I understand the importance of story structure. What I did not expect was finding the structure often found in short stories to be present in music. Typhoon is a band that is concerned with telling the truth. Not an overly emotional kind of truth. Just simply the truth that comes from honest, good ol' fashioned suffering. Those who know some background on the lead singer of this band understand he has struggled with his health for most of his life, and this struggle is reflected in his music. This EP in particular deals with many themes reflecting health, death, loneliness, and finding truth in it all. Which is really all we're trying to do right? Find some good honest truth, even if it is painful. But this album is not only about his health. This album deals with themes that any of us can find poignant no matter where we are in this thing called life. This album is very orchestral for a Folk type band (Folkestra?). Every song on this album has a moment that achieves musical fusion, it penetrates the heart and reminds us of times that we've struggled in our lives. If you're a fan of Typhoon and you don't already own this, buy it for hell's sake! If you don't know who Typhoon is, and you've stumbled upon this page, understand that you have stumbled upon a band that understands music is art. It isn't solely for enjoyment (though that is certainly present). If music is art, and this album certainly falls under that distinction, then this is a work to be studied. It deserves to be enjoyed by everyone.

The first time I heard Typhoon I liked it and bought an album
The first time I heard Typhoon I liked it and bought an album, listened to it and then wasn't sure if I like it at all. The music is complex in terms of tempo, volume and instrumentation and uses a wide variety of instruments. The harmonies are unique and the singers earnest. And you find yourself repeating the riffs and wanting to hear it again. And again. That was Whiter Lighter. A New Kind of House seems to be a continuation of that effort and just as rewarding to listen to.Ok - I do have one complaint about Typhoon's albums: the volume dynamics make it difficult to listen to in anything other than perfect silence. I suppose I could normalize my mp3s.

Fantabulous to mine ears
I find i am alot better at listening to music than i am at writing a review about music.music being kinda a personal expierence, you know.. but alas typhoon needs more stars.typhoon is fun and also melancholy, youthfully energetic with an old soul, they play with abandon and restraint.if you like typhoon then i like you.see also: local natives, blind pilot, iron and wine, nathaniel rateliff, hey marseilles, mumford and sons, the head and the heart..these bands are kind of in the same room...kind of.

Wonderful Music!
Listen to this everyone! Typhoon is a sweet sweet band. With 11 members there is lots of musical texture here and a genuine, soulful, sincerity that comes through their sound. If you enjoy Typhoon then go beyond the NEW KIND OF House album too. Over the past year as I have listened to them, they are becoming more complex and tight as a band. Hearing them is a creatively inspiring experience.

from Letterman to me
Saw & heard them on Letterman, now have ALL of their recordings. Love their lyrics, harmonies, instrumentals, and their image/personalities on stage.

good enough that it should be a longer album
typhoon has done another great job creating artsy sing-along-even-if-you-don't-know-the-words songs, a la efterklang. it's good, but needs to be longer.

Typhoon's work is a wonderful mix of lyrical and compositional genius! The band will surely be getting more attention as tome goes on. I first saw the on David Letterman - you can find that on youtube.
