Great book
Was looking for a book to move on from picture books, perfect choice. Simple vocabulary and plot but funny and interesting to young kids with lovely illustrations. My 4yo and 2yo loved it, I’m ordering more in this series.

A great detective book
Nate the Great is about a boy detective who is always on a case. He loves pancakes and his dog Fludge loves bones. There's a very strange character called Rosnamond who has a lot of cats, and some other funny characters too. There's information about animals, things to make and jokes. I recommend this book to 7 year olds.

If Raymond Chandler Had Written Children's Books...
I kept seeing references to the "Nate the Great" books being classics and decided to try this first one to get some idea of what all the fuss is about. I was blown away by how good this book, and some later Nate books I got, are. There are some very, very good middle grade noir books that feature a middle grade Sam Spade style detective, and I like them because the tight plotting, snappy dialogue, and clean style is not only entertaining but a good model for young readers and writers. Well, this is basically a chapter book version of that that has the same virtues. The writing is crisp, which fits perfectly with the noir style and with an early reader's need for sharp, clean, punchy sentences. There is dry humor. There are appealing sidekicks and supporting characters. And, unlike a lot of sloppy mysteries, these books are built on real clues, rigorous logical thought, and common sense. On top of all that, Nate actually displays a bit of that Sam Spade weary hero character that makes noir so special.I just don't see how it gets better than this. Please note that I found this book while browsing the local library's Kindle books, and downloaded it for free. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

Great book. Great series.
I just had to buy this book for my son as he's called Nate. I am in the process of buying all the others in the series as they are such great books. They are for reading age 8, but we have been reading them to our son since he was born.Nate the Great has to solve different cases in each book, but i love the continuing themes throughout the series - Nate has to eat pancakes, Rosamond is always strange etc.Another great feature is the 'Extra Activities' in the back that are related to the story.Buy this one first, you won't be dissapointed, and will be back to buy the others.

Fun Picture Book All Will Enjoy
Meet Nate the Great, the neighborhood detective. He's just finishing up breakfast (pancakes, of course) when Annie calls. She's lost the picture of her dog Fang that she just painted and wants help finding it. So Nate goes over and helps her hunt down the leads. But can he solve the mystery?I remember this book well from my childhood, and it's still good for a few grins today. Nate has some great one-liners, especially when read with a Joe Friday monotone. The plot is very creative if a bit obvious at the end to adults. The pictures only add to the pleasure. This is the strongest book from the series. Children will ask for it over and over; I know I did. Parents will enjoy the humor and characters as well. Buy it today for read aloud pleasure.

We love these!
These aren’t new, I loved the stories of the kid detective, and now my son loves them too. They are short, sweet, and it’s always a clever little mini mystery. I would recommend for a 1st or 2nd grade to self-read or as a read-together book. An older kid might still like these but they are ideal for an early independent reader. We love books and we recommend you give these a try!
