Great Read!
This was a wonderful book. We already knew we were getting an English Springer and I had them growing up. But we hadn’t gotten a dog ourselves yet. I felt it was important to know what we could about the breed even more so than we did, I now understand my childhood dogs more than I ever did. This was super great info, although I give it 4 stars only bc there was some repetitions.

Great Compilation Book on Spaniels! So excited and proud to have contributed!
This is a wonderful book that outlines succinctly all important aspects of the ESS breed. ESS are a special breed of dogs that deserve to be celebrated in this manner. Any new ESS owner should purchase this book. Happy to have contributed several pictures of my Jaxon, aka Jaxy (5) and Bella aka Belly (1), both of whom bring so much joy to my life.

OK but not great....
As I contributor to this book I wish I could write a more positive review, but I was disappointed when I received the book and read it. The Springer is a hunting breed and there were only 3 or 4 pages about hunting a Springer. There was really very little useful information there. While the book stated it was important to get a puppy from Field Lines if your interest was in getting a Springer for hunting, it really didn't tell how to determine if a puppy was from field lines or show lines. Pictures of both show and field lines would have been helpful for comparison as well as a discussion on how to read pedigrees to determine if a Springer was from field or show lines. I also disagree with the repeated statements that Springers from Show Lines make better family dogs than Springers from Field lines. This is simply not true. It was implied that Springers from field lines energy level was too high to make for a good house dog unless they were exercised two hours a day. Really? Two hours a day? I don't think so. Who has 2 hours a day to exercise a dog? All dogs need exercise regardless of the breed, but I've bred Springers from Field Lines for the past 29 years and every pup I've ever placed went to a family where it doubled as the family pet. I've seen more than one Springer from Show Lines that had a poor temperament and have heard of others. When a dog is bred for looks only (like with dogs from Show Lines) temperament and other factors are secondary to conformation. Springers from field lines have to have a sound temperament, be intelligent, highly trainable, etc. At a field trial they will be around 40 or 50 dogs at times (or more) as well as a lot of people. A dog with a poor temperament would not be allowed at a field trial. They absolutely have to be of sound temperament to be around that many people and other dogs. It was obvious to me that the author had little interest or experience with Field Bred Springers. On a more positive note, the overall information was good, although much of it could be applied to a dog of any breed. There was good information on obedience training, health, etc. I wasn't quite sure why there was a section on Springers that have been crossed with other breeds as these dogs really have nothing to do with a purebred Springer.Without getting into more specifics, I really don't see where this book says anything that hasn't already been said in other books on Springers. I definitely would not consider this book "The Complete Guide to English Springer Spaniels". It's not to be confused with "The New Complete English Springer Spaniel" by Julia Glasgow, which is a far better book than this book. If anyone is interested in a book for training a Springer for the field, there are some excellent book by several different authors.... Check out books by James Spencer, Joe Irving, Ken Roebuck, etc...

Handy book, easy to read
Not as informative as I would have liked. Quite general, would've preferred more detailed information on the breed. Quite repetitive, throughout chapters.

Interesting book
Useful book for basic work with springers, could have done with more advice on training, but all round it was good

English Springers in the USA
Some great advice but could do with going a bit deeper. It’s clearly directed at the US audience and a little dated as well but a good reference guide.
