The Tain

A 1914 translation, with all the euphemisms that may imply. It's an OK translation, but stiff and censored compared with Kinsella's or Carson's. I suspect its value is in the footnotes and bibliographic references to important research up to that time. I'm reminded of the differences among the early movie of "The Threepenny Opera", the 1950s translation and stage production of "The Threepenny Opera", and the one on which the 1976 Lincoln Center production was based.Disclosure: I haven't read the complete book, but enough to get an idea of it compared with Kinsella's (I don't read Old Irish), and I have some knowledge of some of the items mentioned in Dunn's footnotes. YMMV.
