Fabulous
Having read Bright, which is episodic and short story-esque in and of itself, I was curious if Arid Dreams would hold up as well as Pimwana's novel. I was surprised and delighted to find the stories yet more engaging. They at times hold notes of the bizarre intermixed with the mundane, they dabble in the taboo that humanity dabbles in regularly while pretending not to, they push buttons. But most of all they flow beautifully, are incredibly readable and memorable, and while they are reminiscent of Bright, clearly created by the same author and same author's eye and ear for human agency, this collection stands apart as a truly unique enterprise rather than rinsing and repeating the author's other work but in short form. My only disappointment is that now having read bot of Pimwana's texts available in English translation, there is not more of her work available at this time. I sincerely hope this will not remain the case, as we need more of this truly fine author. I would love to read through her catalog of texts and hope to be given the chance to do so. A fabulous short story collection.
