Love It!
I bought this machine to have around the house. The price was excellent, and when it arrived I was pleasantly surprised at it's versatility. It is quite easy to use and has a feature on it that allows one to mute and sing over the vocal sound of a regular CD. It hooks up to the television so one can view lyrics if you have a karoake CD, however, I have not done this yet. I assume it will work as fine as the rest of the machine. The disco light feature is corny,at best, but kids seem to like it. The sound quality of the machine is fair to good. It has more features and is of much better quality than a Memorex machine I bought previously that cost more and broke within 3 uses. I anticipate that with care, this machine will last a while. We really enjoy this machine and I just bought an extra microphone so we can do duets!

Singing Machine SML-383
This is the 2nd Singing Machine I purchased after returning the original I purchased for my Grandsons Birthday. This one seems to be working fine and I hope it continues to work. The original stopped working within 2 days of using..just stopped..no sound no nothing! (The lights, sound and easy carry handle are great for a 7 year old.) He loves it and uses it everyday! I had no problems at all with the return and refund of first machine. Singing Machine SML-383 Portable CDG Player Karaoke Machine, Black

What sound problems?
I already inherited a wealth of karaoke files (.cdg) for my computer, so I was debating whether I should just purchase a pair of microphones and do a karaoke set up on my Mac, or just get a karaoke machine. I obviously decided to take the less tech-savvy route and got this machine, and I'm so glad I did! It was easy to set up and the controls were intuitive and made sense. I just connect my computer to my tv and speaker system to play the music and lyrics, and just let this little guy handle all the vocals. So far, I'm very pleased with it! I went ahead and purchased the Nady mic that was featured on the "frequently bought together" and am very happy with it. The Nady feels more solid than the mic that came with the Singing Machine, but both sound fine. No one has ever fought over "the good mic," so I think it's safe to say they're equally good. The sound output was just fine for home use. I know what a good sound system sounds like, and I also know how much they cost. I've also heard my share of bad sound systems and this is definitely not bad (regardless of cost). If anyone says otherwise, they are being far too picky for a $50 karaoke machine or got a bad unit. Also, if anyone is curious, it actually comes with two sample CDs. They each have about 20 traditional songs on them such as London Bridge, Alphabet Song, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Yankee Doodle, etc. As well as some Christmas classics like Jingle Bells, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, The First Noel, etc. EDIT: In response to a comment, yes, it can play regular CDs like any other CD player.

Great Concept but...
We recently purchased this unit for our twin girls on their 6th birthday. We also purchased and extra microphone and two Billboard Hits karaoke CDs. Note - you will want to purchase other CDs because the music included is strictly traditional nursery rhymes and early childhood songs. The unit plugs into your TV which allows the singers to see the words, which is critical if you want kids to sing along. Unfortunately, the unit does not consistently play any of the CDs (including the ones included), and it skips and/or shuts down quite often. My guess is that the laser used to read the CDs is quite cheap and does not perform as well as a higher quality version. Either way, the kids have fun (as do the adults) when it works, but you will be frustrated by the poor quality of the player in my opinion.

great gift!
We bought this machine for our 6 year old daughter who loves to sing and dance for Christmas. She loves it and we think it's a great value for what you are getting. She loves the strobe lights on the front and her and her friends have had a lot of fun playing with it. The sound is great and it's not to heavy if you have to move it around a bit. We bought one of the princess DVD's to sing along with but I find that she just really likes to hear her own voice and sing alone on it. Anyway, great purchase. We were very please with the quality and price.

KEEP LOOKING-DON'T BUY THIS ONE!
This was a joke from the get go. After reading many reviews on these type of products, I chose this one in spite of my gut feeling that was telling me not to. Lesson learned...trust your gut! It is about as cheap of plastic and low quality as can be. It didnt really work well straight out of the box. However, it was Christmas day with our pretty sizable family crowd so we chalked it up to that. We finally got it hooked up to the tv. We played a cd and could hear ourselves sing very well but the cd accompaniment was so soft it was almost undetectable. We took it home and tried again because the kids absolutely loved the idea of singing along on a microphone. Well, things just got worse from there. After a very short period of time and very little use, it has quit working completely...won't even turn on now. Admitedly, we did not seek help right away due to all the comotion of Christmas and New Years, traveling, and what not. Finally was going to call the manufacturer and learned the only means of communication with them is through email. And, since it was purchased by the grandparents as a gift for Christmas, it was purchased in early December but never even taken out of the box until Christmas Day. With only a 90 day warranty period, almost 30 days were lost. Had I purchased this item locally, I would be able to take it back to the store and speak with a real person. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Now I'm fearful my entire $60 is being thrown in the trash. Feeling ripped off, Tami

Good value for the price.
One of our favorite toys we have! The kids love it! Sounds good for the price. Great price for the fact that it comes with a microphone. Ours is put up high because it's easily something my two rough little boys would break. But if you take good care to make sure your kids aren't rough with it, it could last you a long time. Our first one took a spill and came apart but still worked. So I ordered this one. It is made of a compressed material similar to mdf. Again, something to monitor use of unless it's for older kids. But provides hours of fun!

Good value for the price
Should anyone expect to be 'wow-ed' by a forty-dollar karaoke machine? Of course not. What you get is something that's objectively cheap (about forty dollars) and it does look cheap. On the other hand, it performs well and it even exceeds the low expectations so I would say this is 'good value' for the money. This is what you get for your money and you are getting a lot: - AC or battery (8 C-cell) powered - Video and stereo outputs via supplied wire - 2 MIC jacks - Included wired microphone - Disco lights (can turn them off) - Volume, balance controls - Stop, Skip, Repeat buttons - Program capability - AVC (Auto Voice Control) - CD player - Sample CD - Handle You need to connect the machine to a TV if you want to see the lyrics but you don't have to. Programming is quite easy and operation and access to the various features is straightforward. I can't say that I 'love' this machine because it screams 'cheap' and it's a little bulky and heavy but, for the money, I do like it so the 4 stars are well earned. Someone in our household has been using it for the past couple of weeks and I've heard of no complaints yet.
