Complete Early Percussion Works

Watching Musicians Give Birth to Modern Music in these performances is exhilarating! Long live! STOCKHAUSEN!!
I am reviewing the dvd release of these works. First the cover: These are among Stockhausen's earliest work, when he was just past 20. So why the photograph of the 70+ composer?: Why to show the trajectory of his long career was remarkably consistent: as Wordsworth put it, the child is father to the man. I am only eleven years his junior so I see my long involvement with his music embodied in this picture and these performances. They are delightful to watch: the musicians are so busy using a variety of tools, utensils, and stuff to make these sounds which last a microsecond but every one carefully thought through by K.S. for its particular and peculiar effect. I got so caught up in the dramatic nature of these performances I will have to listen/watch again for the unified experience. And the contrast of these beginnings with a half a dozen musicians standingaround a gong with musical tools purchased at Target compared to his BIG OPERAS now on stages and dvd is truly amazing. Stockhausen's career was GREATNESS INCARNATE! He combined the most rigorous technicality with the highest spirituality - That is uniquely modern in its unity of things. The music is what counts, and here it is for your repeated delight, but to have met him, to have been in his presence is an unfulfilled dream of mine.

Stockhausen
