A really descriptive book about the lives of our ancestors
I really could not put this book down. It was an easy read so I got through it very quickly. The story illustrates the lifestyles and the difficult times that some of our ancestors had. The story takes place in Manchester and gives detailed and accurate information about the area, but will probably reflect the lives of poor city dwellers nationwide of the era. Although the characters live in poverty it is certainly not a depressing book as the story shows the resilience, the morals and the strength of character that were normal for the time. In a way it made me very proud that my ancestors survived, and I am grateful that they did! I passed the book onto my mother who has found the book to be as enjoyable and as gripping as I did. Even though my father doesn't read many books (he prefers the newspaper) I am sure he will be the next one to read it. I will definitely read the other books Billy Hopkins has written as he has a great way to capture the lives of people at that time in history.

Love this book!
I chose the 5 stars because this book is a brilliant read with some quite dark moments in it, but then again in most parts it is quite uplifting and funny.Personal I like to read factual books and this certainly didn't disappoint me, I felt compelled to read on in the book from the first few lines, I felt that it always left me wanting to know if everyone was going to be ok. In some parts the book was quite funny with a few laugh out loud moments.I really enjoy this book and can't wait the get the next one in the series.Happy reading everyone and enjoy!

Hopkins at his best. A must read if you’ve read Tommy’s World
A must read if you’ve read Tommy’s world as it the story of his wife’s childhood & believe me it’s heartbreaking to read how life was for the underprivileged back in the days of the workhouse. I found it hard to put down

Billy Hopkins
If you like family novels from the 19th-20th century, you'll love Billy Hopkins books. He really absorbs you into the, based on true stories, books. Beware, though, you will want to read the whole series!

Poor Kate. She was really a wonderful person
I felt very different emotions. Poor Kate. She was really a wonderful person. She looked out for her siblings, all through her life. Her father clearly loved his family but knowing he was dying wanted the most lavish funeral. Well he got it but it left his family penniless and off to the work house!!!! Her mother covering her eyes not wanting to see her child receiving a punishment. Would mothers do that today? I felt I really didn't like Kate's mother for neglecting her family. Was that the way it was back in that time?
