A wonderful resource
I fall under the trans umbrella myself, and in the past couple years I’ve read several informative books on trans and gender-nonconforming people. This one strikes me as the most accessible, engaging, well-organized, and inclusive. Other books I’ve read have focused mostly on binary trans folks, while Erickson-Schroth and Jacobs really do justice to the spectrum of identities. It is also one of the more intersectional works, taking care to decenter the white, middle class trans experience. The authors often mention issues involving racism and other social inequalities, and they include information on culturally and racially diverse trans experiences and identities. And not only do they debunk myths and misconceptions — they do so by drawing on empirical data. At the end of the book you will find twenty pages of resources, and close to another twenty pages of works cited for each chapter/myth. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to better understand the realities of being trans.
