Surprisingly, I’m really enjoying DBZ Kai
I wouldn’t say I am an “anime fan” though I do watch a few shows that originated in Japan that have been dubbed in English. So I wasn’t sure if watching Dragon Ball Z Kai was would be worth it. Especially since despite bringing back most of the original voice cast, DBZ Kai used a new voice actor for my favorite character, Gohan.I ended up giving in and watched seasons 1-3 on Amazon Video. I was actually surprised just how much I enjoyed it! The storyline seemed to flow better and was more cohesive than the original. Enemies who turned allies don’t seemingly do so overnight (though this has slowed down Vegta’s change even more). Despite removing most of the filler, I noticed many new scenes that had either originally been cut or perhaps were created for DBZ Kai. The voice acting has drastically improved, no doubt due to them knowing the characters better after so many years (i.e. the characters they were voicing were much newer to many of them during the original DBZ Saiyan Saga). And surprisingly, I quickly became used to Gohan and the handful of few other new voices much easier as faster than I would thought. The reason I deducted a star was a result of the Blu-Ray edition edition not having closed captions, something I can’t watch a show without. Seasons 1-3 had them on Amazon so I’m not sure why they’re missing here. What it does have, however, are subtitles. Why an English dub would have English subtitles is beyond me... maybe true anime fans know, but they don’t work well as a closed caption substitute because they don’t match the audio. Im not just talking about a just a missing word here or there either. A good example is when Gohan is in SSJ form while in the hyperbolic time chamber training on his own. Goku is preparing food and calls Gohan and says:“Hey Gohan! Come on back. Lunch is ready.“Alright, time to fuel up. Super Saiyan or not, like your mom always says, a growing boy has gotta eat”.But the subtitles show:“Hey Gohan! Let’s have something to eat.“Yeah, you’ve gotta eat up, and keep your body strong or Chichi is going to be mad at me too.A better example is shorty after, when Vegeta is fighting Perfect Cell, he says:“Cell! You’ve mocked me for the last time. You truly believe your power is far superior to mine? Here, if you have the guts to —- an attack, let’s see if your perfect enough to withstand this.” (I don’t know what word he is saying before “an attack”. It sounds like “power” but I’m not sure that makes sense. This is the perfect example of why I use closed captions!)The subtitles read:“Cell! Regardless of how strong your perfect form might be, do you have the guts to take this on? I doubt it! You’re just a big pantywaists!”

Continues to impress even me! (A die hard DBZ fan)
I have been a loyal fan of Dragon Ball Z since I was younger and watching the original run on Toonami and on VHS. I drifted away from DBZ for many years but have been an anime enthusiast ever since DBZ got me hooked.Dragon Ball Z Kai caught my eye for several reasons: mainly being remastered yet retaining the original 4:3 aspect ratio (unlike the previous two versions that chopped part of the format to be presented in pseudo widescreen). I have faithfully purchased the Kai series (the titles released so far) on Blu-Ray. Here are my thoughts:Part four takes us through the remainder of the Freiza saga. Let's just say this is probably the most action packed set of episodes in the entire series except maybe the cell games saga (and a brief bit of crazy action during the Vegeta: Cell: Android: Piccolo fights leading up to Perfect Cell).Technical stuff:The ratio is kept to the original 4:3 aspect. Some animations have been cleaned and even re-animated (in the case of some of the lighting effects from ki attacks and power-ups). Some of the re-animated shots look like something from American Saturday morning cartoons rather than anime, but these instances were very rare. The two that stood out were in a previous volume anyway. The sound is vastly superior to the previous versions. The English dub is improved and they aren't afraid to get a little dirty (they swear often, but not in an offensive way. They just yell 'you bastard' a lot). Though the few uses of swearing is in line with the more literal translation. Also, the American voice acting is a lot better this time through. Most of the lines have been slightly changed to stick closer to the actual translation. The Japanese voice acting is the original (highly amusing in some roles) though it has also been cleaned up a bit so that static is removed. The music is the original Japanese score, just re-digitized for this release. It is superior to the original Japanese and the American scores (though the American score was pretty good considering).Editing:Here is where most die hard Dragon Ball Z fans choke up: There is a lot of cut content. I have seen the original, un-cut, American and Japanese versions. I gotta tell you. You're not missing anything. Most of what was cut was pure filler by TOEI trying to fill time slots. They've also removed a lot of re-used cells. I remember how annoyed I was to see Piccolo battling the Android and TOEI reusing animation cells from the Piccolo-Raditz battle. Seriously. Also, I don't hear too many people upset about missing out on the Garlic Jr saga. They cut about 50 episodes (give or take) and reduced the amount to 98 (through the Cell Games saga). I don't know if they will continue through the Buu saga (no word yet even in Japan), but I am a huge fan on the improvement in quality of picture and sound so I hope they do.Also of note: the Blu-Ray version is presented in full HD, though the original show was analog and standard definition. There is a noticeable difference between the DVD and Blu-Ray version in animation clarity and quality. There is also a major difference on the sound. The difference is worth the $2 or so for the Blu-Ray vs DVD if you have a player.

Dragon Ball Z Kai: Season Four [Blu-ray]
Dragon Ball Z Kai: Season Four [Blu-ray] comes with 4 disc. Episodes 78-98. Quality and Sound are superb the Aspect ration is 4:3 the original ration Dragon Ball/Z/GT was first aired. Lots of action, lot of the filler that the original dub had is gone. The picture quality is good. However, sometimes it switches from the new Kai scenes to the original which is no big deal since it still looks better than the original. The Japanese BGM is only on here no Bruce Faulconer Music which sucks but didn't bother me. 1080p native on Blu-Ray. All Disc come with English dub with reedited dialogue also Japanese with sub titles and in my opinion this version has a better Dub than the original dialogue. Its uncut with blood and some curse words which is cool see since the original did not have that. Not 100% true to the manga but close. Really recommend to anyone has is a fan of DBZ to give Kai a try. Even myself a long time fan since watching as a kid back on Toonami was bit spectacle about Kai. Cannot wait for the rest of the Sagas to be released sometime in 2014.Great Saiyanman SagaWorld Tournament SagaBabidi SagaMajin Buu SagaFusion SagaKid Buu SagaBut knowing Kai we will see what gets cut out since the original DBZ had a lot of filler episodes.

Great even without the filler.
As a big DBZ fan I like to have all the dvds and blu-rays, while most purists will say Kai is not as good as the originals I only half agree, yes I grew up with the old proper versions but this is a great way to get others into the saga. My wife has seen some of the originals but she gets bored with the filler content dragging out as does my son so these are a treat to watch with them! The only downsides really is the awful opening credits, but these are easily skipped!Movie Mars were great, had an issue with first lot dispached (seasons 2, 3 & 4 all together, I assume it was customs or lost in transit) but they got me sorted and sent them out seperate so the individual parcels didnt get held up by customs or anything so I can't fault them for their service, speedy and polite so a big thumbs up!

Dragonball z kai season one part 4
okay the first thing is that it is just as good as the previous 3 volumes soundtrack good, voice acting good especially the aggresion! but the one thing that i was most disappointed with was (spoilers!) is gokus transformation simply cause ive seen it on z! its not that is rubbish far from it its just i personally prefer the original for 2 reasons.1, after krillins death its doesnt feel as personal as in z (no time to reflect!) and2, the music when goku transforms in z in well no words can describe how good it was but in this version theres no music!but what is better in this is again aggresion and language which makes it feel more adult!apart from that and missing/changing one liners i am glad i bought this just wish they ended frieza saga with this volume not 3 more to go on next volume!
