LOVE LOVE LOVE PALLOTTA AND HIS GENIUS!
WE LOVE THIS BOOK! WE love Jerry Pallotta. I learned so much about herbs, spices, extracts ... and so did my kids. They loved the depth of the artwork on each page---there is so much to find. We gave this as a baby gift to other foodies. All Jerry's books have been such a treat for our family! For little ones learning their ABC's and big kids and adults!

Great book! My son loves all of Jerry Pallotta's ...
Great book! My son loves all of Jerry Pallotta's vehicle alphabet books, so I wasn't sure how this one would be, but he loved it.

For the food wizard in all of us...
Never has an alphabet book bridged the gap between the adults' world and the children's world as well as this! For children learning letters, the illustrations of the various spices are a backdrop, but for the adults the reverse has occurred. To see spices categorized by alphabet and shown off in vivid illustrations brings cooking home for all of us who remember the smells of a warm kitchen.Buy this for any child of any age to whom you want to introduce the world of letters, of colors, of spices, of cooking. Be prepared for the appetite it will bring on!

Great, but I wanted even more
Good book, but with three issues.1. By limiting the book to the 26 ABCs, the book skipped a lot of spices. If the author ditched the ABCs or just did multiple pages for each letter as needed, then more spices could have been included. Some things NOT included are cumin, paprika, sesame, thyme, sage, chili powder, coriander, celery seed, allspice, cardamom, turmeric, chives, cloves, marjoram, onion, parsley, annatto, mace, lemongrass, etc. That is a lot not included. Do I like the book? YES! but it just left too many things out so I wanted more.2. The book did not clearly warn readers that Nutmeg was a poison and to keep it stored safely away from small children. Only eat it in very small doses. In fact, I don't have nutmeg in the house anymore because kids get into everything.3. The book includes lavender instead of lemongrass. First of all, lavender is not YUMMY and you don't sprinkle it on your food at the dinner table, but we use lemongrass and lemons in cooking all the time, so why go for the bizarre? Plus most of the lavender page was not even about food or cooking which did not seem to fit the book's theme at all. Second, lavender affects/attacks the nervous system in a way that is not fully understood. It is true that lavender may help some people relax, reduce pain, or lessen psychological disorders.... but for others, lavender does the opposite and causes severe pain, migraines, feelings of malaise, panic, and creates psychological issues. To be honest, lavender is one of the few substances I have banned from our house - so I wish lavender was not included in the book.
