Good book but CD is not impressive
This is actually a very good book and while the CD in closed is helpful it's a little difficult to follow. The CD is simply Amish children saying phrases in Amish language. When you try to follow along in the book there is no reference to where they're at you just have to listen and try to match it up. I thought the city was something I could have listened to in the car with the phrase being set in English and then an Amish but that is not the case. It is simply the Amish phrases, just a selection of them, for each lesson being repeated by the children so you have to have the book in front of you to try and follow along

Colorful primer to learn and enjoy the Pennsylvania Dutch (Amish) dialect
This very well-illustrated book is fun to read. It is carefully composed of 25 lessons of four pages each. A helpful CD accompanies the book and uses children's voices. Stoltzfus is able to avoid tedious discussions of grammar and introduces new vocabulary in a clever manner. One wonders how the author was able to take the photographs of the Amish. This book is published in 2013 and should be very successful. Tourists to the Amish country will find it an effective way to learn and appreciate the Amish culture and lifestyle. While it is indeed intended for ages 10 through 100, it could be especially valuable in a school setting (public, private, or home-schooling) for a one month unit in language arts, American history, or social studies. American children will love to contrast their busy lives full of technology, adult goals, and schedules with the most different current lives of their Amish and Mennonite counterparts.which are based around farm and family. After this book is digested, a more advanced book such as Schwetz Mol Deitsch by Brown and Madenford (2009) is suggested. Amish (Pennsylvania Dutch), high German, and English are closely related. It is a pleasure to compare and contrast them them through this worthy book, Speaking Amish.

the book is an excellent primer. It includes a CD but I have ...
This seems to be written in the Midwest "flavor" of Pennsylvania German. This differs from the Pennsylvania "flavor" a bit in spelling, pronunciation, and vocabulary. That is not a drawback in my view, but the potential purchaser should be aware of this up front. That having been said, the book is an excellent primer. It includes a CD but I have not listened to it since I want to focus on the Pennsylvania pronunciations. Note that Midwestern Pennsylvania Germans equal or outnumber those in Pennsylvania now! So, this CD is likely to be useful to many people, especially those west or south of Pennsylvania.

A good book
Book was perfect...even had a CD...unfortunately I had ordered it for my penpal in an Ohio prison who needed it for a class he is taking...trying to change his life for the better, upon release. Since I sent it as a gift, it had no receipt....all books received in a prison need a receipt. The Department of Corrections would not allow me to call and have the receipt faxed over...it had to come with the book...so they would not allow him to have it. Please always send receipts to prisons...but the book was a good one.

Good book bud used
The content of the book I received is what I expected, it’s a good primer. However, the front and back covers of the book is creased and soiled .Apparently it has been used and returned. As mentioned above it appears that the item was returned and Whoever returned it or use packing tape to fasten the CD to the back cover. When I tried to remove the tape to play the CD to tape pulled all the data of the back of the CD. CVS is now useless.

Charming instruction won me over
Non academic and fairly non systematic but very charming approach to language instruction. Lovely photos and a kind human voice behind it all. I ended up loving this book.

The CD is much too fast
I wish this lady had listened to other language recordings before she made this. It is way too fast to use. The book is nice though. My wife and I are moving to Amish country and our neighbors are Amish. We want very much to fit in and be liked by our neighbors so we are going to try very hard to speak with them in any way they feel comfortable.
