good resource
As with John Andrews' other books on antiques this is a good resource. The thing that made it stand out to me is the coverage of furniture from other countries - not just France, America and England. As with his other books - very readable.

Photos were nice.
For a complete amateur, "Antique Furniture" gave some good information, especially on eras of antique furniture. I would have appreciated a more "hands on" approach, what to look to guestimate the age of a particular piece, or email sites for further info.

Ok but no need to purchase
An ok reference material but not a necessary book

From Vasari to Mackintosh
Well illustrated with many excellent photographs. Covers a span of periods, from the 12th to the 19th century. All chapters cover the main countries of origin of the pieces, included within the specific chapters, and the influences which characterised the differing processes and the craftsmen who created the pieces. The book also contains some marvellous indices, regarding periods and style, plus a very useful bibliography. All in all a very useful, well produced, well researched tome for the novice collector, or any one interested in the history, and historical significance, of finely made furniture. For me, a truly remarkable book... well worth owning.

Excellent for the novice
Very basic, but as such, incredibly useful for the complete novice. Does not address the twentieth century, as it is truly about 'antiques' not 'vintage' style. However you get a solid chronological account from Gothic to Victorian American, with detailed photographic illustrations. The text is hardly riveting, but factual and clear.
