Great resource for National park
Planning our first trip to Great Basin, this book has been a perfect one stop shop for all the info we need. Planning on trying several of the hikes! lol

Great book for travel information.
Decen book to find information in all one place on the area. This is mostly like a tour guide book with a little history mixed in.

Get the Kindle version, not the paperback
I ordered the paperback version of this guide. The photos in this version are in black and white and they are a bit grainy. The photo of Lexington Arch, used on page 31, and repeated on page 121 but cropped differently, looks most like a black shadow in B&W. Since other reviewers commented on the beautiful photos, I assume that is the Kindle Fire edition they were using and would recommend the cheaper Kindle version if the photos are in color. The guide gives a lot of useful background on services in the area which is important given the remoteness of the park. The history of the area and the park in particular were good but could have been enlivened by some anecdotes and more depth. The strongest part of the guide is the trail descriptions which cover many of the routes. Excellent trail coverage includes access to water, estimated time, and difficulty as well as key location points. The maps are useful but given the elevation changes, topographical maps would be better. Overall, I think the guide is very useful but color photos in the paperback edition would be a big improvement.

Well-written and well-researched
This is a well-written and well-researched guide. You usually don't read a guide booklike a work of non-fiction, but I found myself reading straight through the veryinteresting description of the Great Basin and history of the area. The real strength ofthe book, however, is the information. Given that the park is in the middle of nowhere andso far from any major city, I liked the detailed information on lodging, dining, groceries, gasoline, etc near the park. I wouldn't want to scramble to find out all that info when Igot there. I also really like the detailed info on the hikes. Each hike has a map, directions to the trailhead (especially nice for some of the remote Mt. Moriah wildernesstrailheads), significant points along the way with mileage, elevation change, wateravailability, and a good general description. Also, the hikes are organized by what youwant to accomplish (day hike, backpack, photography, family hiking) rather than just bywhere they are in the park. There's so much other information in the guide, too, likepicnicking, birding, fishing, bringing "weed-free" hay for your horse, caving, wildflowers...the list goes on and on.

Good Book Well Worth the Price
Fails to mention dogs are not allowed on any trail but Lexington Arche which you need high clearance 4 wheel drive to get to. Other than that it’s an awesome basic overview of hikes with a bit of history. If you just need maps of the park you may wanna check the NPS website.

Okay, not Stellar
The book is fine, typical of this kind of book. Not much available on this National Park. This one was a good price and will do what we need.

Very informational book about this unique and unpopulated part of the country. Using it to learn about the area and plan a backpacking trip there. Was able to connect with the author via email through his website as well and got an immediate, satisfying response.
