Basic OBD-2 reader, great for troubleshooting, great for making sure car is ready for emissions
This is not a miracle tool! An OBD-2 reader READS CODES off the ECU. It does not diagnose. It does not know anything except what the code is. It works great for that, it is accurate, easy to use, and inexpensive ($24 now? I probably paid that 9+ years ago). This is a passive scanner, it can clear codes but not much else. It can't, for example, select what tire you have on your Honda (our Honda has 2 rim diameters and 2 tire types for each diameter to choose from, a fancy OBD-2 tool will allow you to select which one) or activate your ABS when you're bleeding brakes (like on our Suburban). I got this originally Nov 30, 2016, because my car had a check engine light ("CEL") on. I was an automotive service writer but tracking down a sensor problem was very time consuming and I didn't want to put my guys through that (the lead tech did use his OBD-2 tool to bleed the brakes on my Suburban though). So I did the troubleshooting myself. Ends up that my O2 sensor code (P0037, heater element in downstream O2 sensor is not working) ended up a burnt pin on the ECU! I had to replace the ECU to get the car to pass emissions. My registration had expired due to the emissions. After the new ECU I drove very discretely at night across the state line with the ANCEL plugged in, checked it whenever I came to a stop, and when it was ready I literally drove it to my work (where we do emissions), parked the car, and called my wife for a ride. The next morning someone ran it through emissions (I was not allowed to since it's my car) and it was good. Another car had an intermittent CEL (Chevy Suburban). Knock sensor. This vehicle was known to have intermittent knock sensor issues, especially around rain/moisture weather (water pools where the sensor is). I used the Ancel to clear the light then to see when the vehicle was ready for emissions, then brought it to emissions. I ended up replacing the knock sensors maybe 6 years later, but I passed 3 emissions tests with the sensors working only intermittently. The last time I used it was about 5 months ago, needed to pass emissions but had a new battery (and the engine was out so there was no power for a bit) and therefore the system wasn't ready ("incomplete" status for the various self checks). I drove around with the ANCEL plugged in, checked it every now and then, and when it was ready I went home and parked the car. Passed emissions the next day. I really like this tool, it's simple, useful, easy to use.
