Q: Would this work sideways

For us it didn’t work at all, constantly stopped working, we tried many ways and eventually returned it. I highly doubt it works sideways, it needs pull tension.

Q: Whats the max height it can open a door? I want to possibly use for larger birds like turkeys or geese in future.

The rails are 22 inches in height , thats the highest the door will open

yes it can but the weight of the door can not be over 8 pounds

Q: Does this work with a door that lets down into a ladder? The coop we have has got two doors that latch on the inside and let down like a drawbridge.

I don't think it matters. As long as the door opens vertically it should work.
