You can easily see headings with single degree accuracy and could also probably estimate at half or quarter degree accuracy also. The biggest drawback is that it's difficult to use both eyes for me at least. The image of the compass overlays the image from the other eye, and it's difficult coordinate the two images mentally. The line you read bearings from is not dark enough for me to easily see in a "two eyes open" configuration, and there's no sights or notches elsewhere on the compass to read a bearing with other than that black line. It's a little confusing having four different coordinate systems on a single compass. I'd rather have just 360 degrees, I think in retrospect. It's not as easy to sight uphill or downhill as it would be on a silva ranger for instance.

Works well
Brunton makes good products. I’d purchase this again.

Not so good
I bought this compass from Amazon, but am a bit disappointed with it. It became immediately obvious to me that the compass readings were off. I live in the Cincinnati area, where the declination is currently 5 deg 44 min West. However, after checking the bearings of several known lines it became obvious that the compass was reading about 12 deg greater than the actual bearing--or about 6 additional degrees West, over and above the declination correction.I have checked the bearing of these lines with a different compass, which seems to give a much more accurate reading even though it was a relatively inexpensive compass.I contacted Brunton by e-mail, and asked them if I was doing something wrong or if I had a defective unit. After some discussion, they suggested I return the compass, which cost me $11 in shipping. They did not provide any additional communication subsequent to providing me with an RMA number.About 10 days later, I received a compass in the mail, which may or may not be the original that I sent to them. Regardless, it also reads the same 6 degrees West of magnetic north. On the positive side, the compass does seem to be very consistent and precise (as opposed to accurate), and it is easy to read to the nearest one-half degree. So, if I correct for the fact that I know it is 6 degrees off, it would seem to be very useful. It just seems to me that I ought to be able to get a compass that is quite accurate for the price of this unit. However, communication with Brunton regarding what they did or did not find, and what they might have done about it, was non-existent.So, I am rating the product poorly (2 stars). The compass is not accurate, and the company's service is very poor.

Works as expected
I got this for camping and hiking for the coming summer and I quite like what I see so far. What's to like:+ Made in the US. Always happy to support a company made in the US.+ Rugged build, love the leather cover.+ Verified with another compass and my iPhone, the readings are fairly consistent.+ Illuminated readout is welcome. What's not great:- The price at the time of this review is $239.95 on Amazon. That's bloody expensive, given that my other compass costs a tenth of what this one costs.Other thoughts:US compasses support "mils" as a unit. The source of this terminology is US military (specifically artillery). There are 2 Pi radians in a circle. PI is a constant of approximately 3.14159. That is 2 * 3.1416, or ~6.283 radians. Slicing each radian mil-radians gives you a 1000 mil-radians. Or there are 6283 mil-radians in a circle. Mil-radians are called mils for short. 17.78 mils equal 1 degree. This compass does support 6400-point mils in case you're wondering what the "mils" in the product description meant. There are cheaper alternatives but if you want a reliable compass in this price range, go for it.

Did exactly what I purchased it for. Couldn't be happier.
