"Amateur weather forecasters (which includes just about everyone) will find this volume an informative and entertaining account of the why and how of the weather." — The Nation In simple language, Eric Sloane explains the whys and wherefores of weather and weather forecasting — and does it in a style that's universally appealing. With humor and common sense shining through in a book that's also lively and informative, Sloane shows readers how to predict the weather by "reading" such natural phenomena as winds, skies, and animal sounds. This beautifully illustrated and practical treasure trove of climate lore will enlighten outdoorsmen, farmers, sailors, and anyone else who has ever wondered what a large halo around the moon means, why birds "sit it out" before a storm, and whether or not to take an umbrella when leaving the house. Review: loads of excellent hand drawn diagrams to illustrate the ideas - What a superb book! Weather is such a complex thing, but Sloan makes it accessible, understandable, and by God, fascinating. Pithy and down to Earth language, loads of excellent hand drawn diagrams to illustrate the ideas, and a gently humorous tone lead us to a solid understanding of what makes weather. This should be a textbook in schools! Review: Informative and interesting book according to my 13 year old son - I always buy my children at least one book for Christmas. This has been on my list for awhile after my mom recommended it. I decided to buy it for my son, aged 13, this Christmas. He came downstairs the other day and told me what a neat book it is and repeated back some of the information he had just read. I briefly thumbed through the book before wrapping it and it seemed informative and in depth. At any rate, he is enjoying it and learning something about the weather and as a homeschooling mom, I expect him to give me a full weather report complete with graphics by the time he is done. 😁

Weather forecasting without satellites
You can tell that the author enjoyed creating this book and its' illustrations. He would be impressed with the state of the forecasting science today, as his art from years ago is still a component.

well written but...
As always Sloane is a very detailed person in explaining the topic he covers and he researches his books well. I am using this book for a 6th grade homeschool weather study. I like his detailed descriptions and visualizations but his languages is sometimes archaic for a modern kid. It would be good if a publisher went through and eventually revised it to more modern language. I don't regret buying it. Weather is complex and understanding the pressure of how air above us behaves has to be explained and broken down in stages. I will be finishing this book as our study. I've simply told my son/student I don't expect him to understand it all this is only an intro for future grades.

Fun, Informative.
I love the illustrations. As a recreational pilot this is a great book to review weather and how it can alter your flight plan. Great stuff on how to place your home based on topography.

Excellent Book.
This book will blow you over with all the awesome drawings and great observational science. It has inspired the whole family with nature studies. We can’t pass by the lake now without guessing wind speed.

Helped me win my junior meteorologist badge!
When I ordered this book I thought it would be just about folksy weather wisdom. Was I wrong. If you live at the shore or on the plains this will give great insight to so much.

A Must
I've been reading weather books for ages and none gets even close to this one. A must in meteorology - simple and easy to understand yet it goes deep in the subject.

Beautifully written and illustrated - one of my children's favourite school books this year!
We homeschooled using Ambleside Online this year, and this was one of the books i didn't already own. What a find! It was the most detailed, informative, and fun book - i learned a lot and so did my children - and on those bleary mornings, when this was on the list of assignments, it was usually the first one reached for.

Interesting Reading
What I noticed first was it was not 'dry reading'. The information is presented such that it is more like a conversation than a text book of facts. And a note that even when things are looking one way - mother nature has her own ideas. Still in early chapters, but I like it.

Helps make sense
I’ve got a few weather books and this one helps in comprehension of some key concepts, with the use of illustrations, that other books don’t quite explain well (or at least well enough for me to understand). It is inexpensive and I highly recommend it. I only wish it came in an additional pocket format too, but it’s not a dealbreaker.
