It's rechargeable, and uses a USB-C cable for charging. Looks like it includes a cable, so you'll just need a usb plug/adapter.

How come it's £5 more expensive on Amazon, than on Nintendo.co.uk?

When you lose your lives, do you go right back to start or does it save your progress?

Back to the start. Can pause the game and return to it without having to leave the console powered on.

Can you buy screen protectors specifically for this?

I have not seen official ones, but there are some for sale if you search for "game and watch screen protector" in Amazon. I have not bought them so can't say how good they are.
