Better available elsewhere
Good bright led but let down by rubbish sensors. No adjustment available so comes on when a cloud passes over. Light stays on for up to an hour - supposed to be 5 minutes. Microwave picks up everything up to 20 metres away, or passing cars at 50 meters. Replaced with a better unit with adjustments.

Good but not in a storm
This wasn't the motion detector version. It's bright enough and easy enough to install when replacing a previous bulkhead light. The only but is that it isn't fully leak proof. On a very wet and windy day (horizontal rain in a gale force wind) rain blew in through the facing screws despite the rubber washers. Fortunately it collected in the bottom of the lens and didn't cause it to short.

Lamp Fine Sensor Poor
The lamp is fine but the microwave sensor is very limited so I would recommend not paying extra for it. The sensor has no sensitivity adjustments and a fixed on time of 5 minutes. It's extremely sensitive to movement causing the light to effectively be on all the time. My unit even had the input and output wiring of the sensor labels the wrong way round.

Industrial, but reasonably bright and easy to fit
As most most types of bulkhead lights, they tend to have a rather industrial look and this one is no exception. However, it is important to remember that they are designed to perform a function, typically for security lighting and therefore aesthetics are generally fairly low down on the priority list. In my view, the robustness and brightness are much more important features and this bulkhead hits the mark on both of these. With a lumen rating of 400, it is broadly equivalent to the light which would have been given out by a 40w bulb, in old money, which is reasonably bright however, you may wish to consider whether a larger and brighter version would be preferable. With a colour temperature of 4000K, I think this is just about perfect for the circumstances for which it has been designed (any colder - higher than 4000K - is likely to have a detrimental impact on the environment with too much blue light and any warmer - lower than 4000K - is likely to reduce the perceived brightness). The bulkhead feels very robust and being made from toughened plastic, it should withstand a reasonable amount of abuse. I didn't throw any rocks at it to try it out as I suspect that it wouldn't withstand this level of abuse but anything less than this should hopefully be okay! It is rated as IP65 which means that it is perfect for outdoor environments, being able to protect against water ingress from low pressure jets of water (don't power wash it and it will be okay).Importantly, it is very straightforward to install, with the only steps required being to identify where the cable should feed into the light (there is a slot on each side and a further one on the back), affix the back box of the light to the wall, wire the electric cable into the supplied connector block and refit the diffuser. In order to maintain the IP65 rating, it is essential that a 20mm cable gland seal is used as otherwise, water ingress may take place and cause the lamp to fail prematurely.

750 lumens of 4000k light
Several different models are sold and reviewed on this page: mine is the 17.5cm x 11.5cm bulkhead light without infra-red sensor; so that is what this review is about. It gives a decent amount (750 lumens) of white (4000k) light, and is entirely suitable for mounting on walls or ceilings, especially in corridors or passageways – indoors or out – over an outside door, in a porch or garage, and doubtless many other places too.The average life claimed, of 30,000 hours, could extend over 30 years in many domestic situations, so it won’t be a matter of great concern that the entire unit, not just a bulb, has to be replaced when it finally blows. (But remember that is an AVERAGE; you may be unlucky and get markedly less from the one you happen to buy.)Whether the physical structure of the unit will last for anything over, say, ten years, especially if installed outside, is another matter. Internal metal parts aside, it is all plastic, and doesn’t seem particularly robust. Exposure to sunlight may make it brittle, and the ‘seal’ between the two main parts appears unlikely to withstand driving rain with a gale-force wind behind it.In 24/7 use, the life would be more like 3.4 years. That’s good by comparison with non-LED lighting, but – for as long as they are available – units with replaceable LED bulbs may be a more attractive proposition than having to replace whole units so often.Installation is possible on a competent DIY basis, but if you have any concerns on that score a professional electrician is definitely recommended. It’s a fiddly job that for installation on a ceiling necessarily has to be done above your head. The push-fit terminals don’t do much to make the job less fiddly. (Push on the top of the terminal with a screwdriver; insert the wire, then release the pressure on the screwdriver.)

A weatherproof maintenance-free rectangular bulkhead benefiting from modern LED technology
This Storm light fitting by Luceco offers a traditional small rectangular bulkhead measuring 17.5cm by 11.5cm in a product made from modern materials coupled with the latest LED technology. There are different options available on the same product page – mine is the standard driver version which is straightforward to fit, especially if you are replacing an existing light with the wiring in place, and is a style suitable for mounting near entrances, car ports and porches. The fitting is rated IP65 so is weatherproof and designed for outside use – however, it is perfectly suitable for indoor use too in the right location. The LED is built-in so can't be changed, but with an average life of around 30,000 hours it shouldn't need replacing anytime soon. My version of the fitting has a 7 Watt LED giving a brightness of 750 lumen so should be bright enough for many outdoor locations, and once fitted the unit is maintenance-free. Currently under nineteen pounds from Amazon this Luceco LED Storm Outdoor Bulkhead is decent value for money for a basic model, and if you don't want to have to change a regular bulb frequently it could suit your needs – four stars for quality and value at the price.
