It grows on you!
I bought this book as they were discussing it on Radio 4 and I liked the sound of the style and the subject matter. The book revolves around the privileged set between the wars and their seemingly care free lifestyle. Is unusual that the characters are real but the story line is not based on fact. However apparently it was possible to fish for tuna off the coast of Yorkshire during this period and it was a past time of the wealthy. It took me a while to become engrossed due to the erratic writing style - most of the commentary takes the form of letters written by the various protagonists, however once the action started I was 'hooked' ha ha. well worth reading for the elaborate plot, the multi faceted characters and an insight into a heady but difficult period in history.

A great and thrilling read
This is a book that defies easy categorisation: a touch of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited, a touch of Graham Greene's Ministry of Fear, its a literary thriller, its an examination of social mores. Its greatest pleasure is the superb characterisation and recreation of the louche inter-war period. The action seems almost an after-thought but certainly keeps the pages turning. In all a great read.

A Very Good Read Indeed
Original, witty and never dull. I would recommend this book to anyone. Personally, I prefer it to Mr Hudson's first novel but then I'm not fond of football!

Witty turnpager about 1930s fast set
Scarborough and Whitby have never been this glamorous. This delightful novel weaves together tuna fishing, white slavery and naked lesbians dressed only in snakes. A fast-paced, droll book that's certainly worth a read.

Not at all dazzling
A very tedious and overwritten book, peopled with distinct but wholly unsympathetic characters. Fast paced? Page turner? Not for me I'm afraid. I never give up on books but finally had to throw in the towel on this one after 150 pages or so. Maybe I'm missing something....
