Q: What's the difference between the cylinder and the votive?

The candle holder consists of 2 parts, the base and the glass cylinder. The cylinder lifts off the base which makes it very easy to clean...never submerge the cylinder as water will get inside, use a soft cloth to clean and glass cleaner. The votive is the candle that sits on the center of the base and then the cylinder is put back on the base after the votive candle is lit. You can use any type of tea light candles, or keep refilling the votive candle that comes with it. Then you are ready to enjoy dancing spectrums of rainbows as the flame flickers!! I have had mine for more than 10 years and is still as magical as the first time I used it, my sister loved it so much I surprised her with one...she was overjoyed!!

Yes. The chimney is removable. Please review all of the pictures on the product page to see how easy the lantern is to use and light.

Q: is this real glass or plastic?

The Prism Hurricane Lantern is Made of Glass and Stainless Steel. The lantern is comprised of two layers of translucent glass. Between the layers is a specially designed holograph film which produces the prism effect. The flame literally dances creating a myriad of colors and shapes.

Q: Height? Why do you list it as 11" tall in the title, but only 7 3/8" in the text of your listing? That seems deceptive.

The accurate height is 7-3/8 inches. Amazon has incorrectly provided the 11 inches. It's something I cannot change myself, and will need to contact Amazon for help. Thank you for pointing this out!
