Faithfull Spoon Gouge Woodcarving Chisel [Energy Class A]

Seems good quality, I need to hone edge, but I've not used it for "gouging out" chunks of wood.

I recently took up spoon carving and from there it was just a short hop to kuksa/noggins and bowls. These do require a slightly wider range of tools however so I planned to get these second hand. I soon discovered though that quality make, used gouges can go for quite a bit of money on line so to save a few bob while just starting out I turned to the budget Faithfull brand.The gouge arrived and I was amazed that this had left the factory as 'needing a final sharpen before use' because the edge was ground off almost square at the end. The chisel itself was pretty well made for the money, much better than I had expected in fact but the edge was another thing altogether. A more accurate description would have been 'customer completes manufacturing process at home'. It took a while to sharpen it and care was required because when that much grinding is needed the steel can heat to a temperature that softens it, so keep it cool. I did mine on a sanding belt and dunked it frequently in water throughout the process.Having sharpened the chisel it took a good edge and I used it to carve part of a beech kuksa I'm making. I must say it performed very well, it kept its edge, the handle was comfortable and it seems pretty solid.If this had came with a decent edge I would have given it 5 stars without hesitation but the 2 hours of sharpening and honing put a stop to that. Mr Faithfull in his factory may know a lot about engineering but he obviously knows nowt about wood working.So if you want a good cheap gouge and want to either learn how to sharpen it or practice your existing skills and don't mind the effort involved then you won't get better for the money.

I'm sorry to say even at its very cheap price this product is terrible. Please pay a little more for a better brand.I purchased this gouge as a bit of a test, can I make a cheap gouge good? In this case no. The gouge comes, as expected, blunt. I have a bit of a sharpening OCD. I first took the gouge to my Tormek wet stone sharpening system an sharpened to 1000 grit and then honed. Although the edge felt sharp as soon as I pushed it into some wood it lost its edge. I then polished the bevel with a 10000 grit wet stone, again sharp again and again once pushed into wood it looses its edge. Conclusion is poor steel and poor heat treat.

Very useful tool a bonus for any woodworking kit. Great present for small purses. Would recommend it to any one who creates with wood.

This is a good chisel, once sharpened! I had to grind a lot off to get a decent angle on the edge and then I stuck various grades of wet and dry on the inside of a short section of fall pipe [or was it some other pipe?] with thin, double sided tape. It was easy to maintain a consistent angle holding the chisel on the paper whilst rolling the pipe from side to side with the chisel. Luckily I had a round piece of wood of the right diameter lying around to stick wet and dry on to remove the burr.I hope this helps.
