Good adventure tale for young readers and dog lovers alike
For adults, it is important to know that this book is written at the fifth grade to six grade level, making it well-suited for young readers seeking a great story to stimulate their reading. As an adult reader, I had to put myself in their shoes and overlook some of the simplicity of the language and paucity of historical background, in some cases, about incredibly brave characters other than Togo and the musher Leonhard Seppala. I also think more credit and background is due to the indigenous people who served as mushers. She calls them Eskimos, which seems antiquated now given that many indigenous people in Alaska and Canada find that term laced with racist connotations. As a native Alaskan, Flowers can be excused somewhat since some indigenous people still refer to themselves as Eskimos. So the language jury is still out on that one. There are also some minor editing errors as well, but young readers will probably ignore or miss them anyway. The main thing is that this is quite possibly the most heroic domestic animal epic of all time, and young readers should know Leonhard and Togo’s inspirational story, and Flowers delivers in this regard. Finally, this book makes me proud to own a Siberian husky, which is truly one of the great dog breeds of the world. I strongly suggest that readers who enjoyed this book watch the Disney movie “Togo” which is excellent and re-create many of the episodes in this book.

Exciting, easy read
My 10 year old daughter was excited to learn more about Togo after viewing the Disney movie of the same name. She wants to write a school paper about Togo and Seppala. This book is perfect for her age and interest. The writing is engaging and interesting, the true experiences are exciting! The author's bio is amazing! On top of that, this book is very nice quality, with pages that are of a thicker paper than an average paperback. The font is large and easy to read. I am very pleased with this book and eager to read more from this author.

Fast-paced adventure story
Togo and Leonhard by Pam Flowers is written in an easy-to-read narrative that focuses on the relationship and amazing experiences between Leonhard Seppala and his lead sled dog, Togo. Photographs add to the story and give it an old-time feel. The history of a diphtheria epidemic in Nome, Alaska and the sled dog relay that delivered the life-saving serum is simply told, though the love of dogs and the life of a musher is thoroughly shared. I recommend this book to everyone who loves dog stories and inspirational adventure stories.
