In the early sixteenth century, the playing of wind instruments was traditionally the domain of German and Flemish musicians. However, when a storm forced King Philip the Fair to put ashore in England along with his considerable musical retinue, Henry VIII was inspired to expand the King's Musick. By the end of the century, the situation was reversed: England was the nation to which all others aspired and her players were to be found across Europe. The music on this recording comes from this glorious period of pageantry and national pride, and fully displays the enchanting sound and virtuosic scope of the cornett and sackbut, remarkable instruments seldom heard today.

Fine Recording of Fine Music
A very fine recording from the English early music group His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts. The group is excellent and they display considerable virtuosity in playing this English music from the 16th and 17th Centuries. Most of the music is played by two cornetts, three or four sackbuts, and a keyboardist. There are 31 tracks on this CD including musicy by such composers as Henry VIII, John Bull, and Matthew Locke among others - including several pieces by that very well known composer Anonymous.

Gorgeous use of "sagbutts and cornetts"
This CD is just an enjoyment - lush early music for those who are not (or are) knowledgeable about the period

Excellent.
Came well up to expectations. I am a great fan of Early Music and this is a pleasing addition to my collection.

His Majesties Sagbutts
This CD was okay, but not as good as I had expected. The sound quality was too distant for my taste
