As the Allies march toward Paris in the summer of 1944, Hitler gives orders that the French capital should not fall into enemy hands, or if it does, then 'only as a field of rubble'. The person assigned to carry out this barbaric act is Wehrmacht commander of Greater Paris, General Dietrich von Choltitz, who already has mines planted on the Eiffel Tower, in the Louvre and Notre Dame and on the bridges over the Seine. Nothing should be left as a reminder of the city's former glory. However, at dawn on 25 August, Swedish Consul General Raoul Nordling steals into German headquarters through a secret underground tunnel and there starts a tension-filled game of cat and mouse as Nordling tries to persuade Choltitz to abandon his plan . In this passionate and emotional adaptation of the 2011 stage success by Cyril Gely, the great Volker Schlondorff (Academy Award winner THE TIN DRUM) has created a psychologically elaborate game of political manners between two highly contrasting characters. While Choltitz entrenches himself behind his duty to obey unquestioningly all military orders, Nordling tries everything he can to appeal to reason and humanity and prevent the senseless destruction of the beloved 'City of Lights'. Review: Imagine our world without Paris?? - When I watched “Diplomatie” for the first time with my weekly French Movie Club, I could not leave my seat at the finish for the tears streaming down my face. In fact, the room stayed dark several minutes longer than usual; in the silence could be heard sniffles and digging in purses for tissues. I tear up even now, faced with the gripping reality that Paris, City of Lights, was literally moments away from absolute, total destruction as Hitler’s rage-vengeance for the Allies driving the Reich’s forces out of France in the summer after the Normandy invasions. This film of what was originally a two-man stage play tells the delicate tip-toe of diplomacy in one of the world’s most critically defining moments. In French & German with several language subtitles. Must-see. Review: Diplomacy is a highly engaging drama - This is a well acted movie that looks at the efforts to save Paris in 1944 from destruction on the orders of Hitler. It is a nice compliment to the much older “Is Paris Burning?” But unlike that film which has a more broader perspective this film focuses on the discussions that took place between General Von Cholitz and the Swedeish envoy Nordling. This is a passionate and engaging dialogue based film. Overall a very well done production.

How Was Paris Saved? Something Like This?
A character-driven gem of essentially 2 men in a room, with immense consequences.

Wooden, unrealistic and disappointing
If you're making a historical movie about a major event, you need to make it exciting and credible. Diplomacy trips up right from the start and never recovers. The challenge about telling the story of what happened when the German commander of Paris was told to blow up the city in 1944 is simple - we know Paris survived unscathed. So how do you make a compelling film about that? Diplomacy is clearly a stage play shoehorned onto the screen without much thought or imagination. A mysterious Swedish businessman miraculously appears in the office of the commander the night before the planned destruction and basically bores the German (and the audience) to tears by asking him time and time again whether he wants to go down in history as the man who ruined one of the world's finest cities. Throw in some ill-advised and historically dubious gunplay and you have the indigestible lump that is Diplomacy. This one is a yawner.
