Marvel Super Heroes: Secret Wars

Classic Marvel story
Its a great read especially when you have the X-Men, Hulk, Spider-man, Avengers and Fantastic Four versus many villains including Dr Doom, Dr Octopus. This book usually turns people in to fans of at least one of the above. Its not just 12 issues of fighting. Its got a clever plot too.

Not as good as I remembered it
But then my perception and memory of something I read 25 years ago has unsurprisingly changed over that time. This was one of the first large scale stories of its kind tied up with a toy figure range, although it couldn't have been that successful as I only became aware of them recently. The cast is an impressive array of Marvel's greatest super heroes pitched against mostly not so well known super villains. Most comic fans will be familiar with the heroes, but only Doctor Doom and Doctor Octopus are the instantly recognisable villains, with most of the others I have only ever had a passing or no prior knowledge of. Galactus is also a major character, although the Silver Surfer does not accompany him.The plot is a simple hero versus villain fight to the death issued by the Beyonder, with the prize being anything the victor wishes. It is simply an excuse to have a massive fight, which in itself is the attraction of the title. Some of the plot twists are absurd, but then they are only following the theme throughout US comic history of no matter what happens the heroes can't die, even if they do. Resurrection makes a regular appearance. What it certainly isn't is subtle or particularly sophisticated, but then its target audience was a 12 year old living in 1984.As an adult the dialogue can be jarring and painful to read, being a prime example of corny 1980s superhero comics and the art is surprisingly rushed and by my more discerning standards of UK comic artwork of today, poor in some cases. The Thing is the worst drawn of all of the characters, sometimes appallingly bad, and the artist didn't seem to be able to decide what shape his head should be and stay at.But all this aside, it is comic history and quite simply a thinly veiled and contrived excuse just to get heroes and villains that normally wouldn't meet or cross over to have a good scrap. If you can ignore the clunky dialogue and grating art it is more than worth a read and is a nicely printed and bound book.
