Tiger in the Sea: The Ditching of Flying Tiger 923 and the Desperate Struggle for Survival

I was a pilot flying the Connie for Flying Tigers then.
I was a pilot with the Flying Tiger Line in 1962 and was flying the North Atlantic at the time. Eric did a great job on this book and it should have been written. We all, the ground staff, the flight crews, the office staff, the mechanics were all devastated by this crash. The Super Constellation was a wonderful airplane to fly but the engines were a different breed of cat you might say. The book is completely true and researched very well. I'm biased of course because Eric Lindner picked my brain on the experience of flying the Connie. I wasn't the only person he spoke to just one of many. If you buy this book you won't be disappointed believe me.

Phenomenally Written - A Page Turner
This was a riveting story based on fact. From the first page, I was hooked and couldn't put it down. Extremely well written; I felt like I was on the plane with everyone. I felt like I was sitting in the cockpit with the flight crew; felt their fear, their adrenaline, their duty. As this was happening in 1962, the whole world was watching and waiting to hear what would become of the aircraft that ditched in the Atlantic Ocean. Highly recommend this amazing book.

Moving tale packed with personal backstory
My aunt Carol has shared with me her experience during the Flying Tiger Atlantic crash, and this book just does an amazing job of capturing the human element from the incident. This is not just a history book - it's a tale of human perspective and experience, of human heart and the little things that make us strive to survive when all other things tell us we can't.

History that feels like fiction
Reading about all the people who were on the plane, and the circumstances that put them there, made the story real for me. Here are all these people, most of them service members or their families, on a military plane flying at night over the open ocean, and the unthinkable happens. It's not the crash itself that drew me in but what happened afterwards, how each person handled that situation, whether with panic or steel, and knowing that just because we all know the emergency protocols in the event of a water landing, does not mean everything will be fine once the landing takes place. The author blended history with a sense of awe that 68 people survived a harrowing ordeal, described in minute detail, to make the reader feel like we were there too. I also enjoyed all the details he went into with regard to this project of love, how long it took to do the research and what lengths he had to go to in order to get all the most relevant and accurate information.

I also flew on Connies!
I was a passenger twice in the late '50s landing in Reykjavik both times. Nothing but comfort nothing but luxury for my family and me, military travelers.

Thrilling Story of Survival
Tiger in the Sea was an fascinating tale of struggle and heroism! The fact that this is a non-fiction book, meticulously researched and annotated, makes it all the more engrossing. A plane goes down in hurricane force winds and rain in the North Atlantic and people live to tell the harrowing tale. The author has done a wonderful job of laying our the enormous odds against anyone being rescued. He provides the reader with technical information about what went wrong but also, through first hand accounts from survivors and rescuers, illuminates the thoughts and feelings of all involved. He takes you through the terror and triumph of the crash. Having a personal connection to the airline captain of the doom flight, the author gives the reader insights into the aftermath of such an impossible feat and how those who walked away from this tragedy moved on. A wonderful, quick read - I found this book really well written - make sure you read the footnotes- they add so much to the story!!

Exciting and Historical
Gripping, meticulously researched and wonderfully written. Airliners were making the transistion to jets and proving just how reliable they were over the piston propeller age. I retired from the airline and it's purchaser mentioned in this book. I missed the prop age but flew with many as a new hire who were hired or flew as Captain the venerable "Connie." I knew of this story but didn't know the whole story, now I do. The mystery of the disappearing records were just a rumour but now are fact. I couldn't put this down but found myself slowing down reading near the end as I didn't want the book to end! Congratulations to the author, you hit it out of the park and honored all of those involved.

Hard to put down!
The history of Flying Tiger 923 was all new to me, as I’m sure it has been to many others! The impeccable writing had me reading ferociously to see what was going to happen next. The story of many great heroes is recounted here, not the least of which was Captain John Murray! Excellent book!
