This card is not Solidworks certified. What problems should I expect if I buy anyway. I do mechanical design and some quite large models but no render

Edmund, Solidworks certifies Nvidia Quadro cards for their software. This card would work just fine, but just know that if you are designing assemblies with 20,000 parts and you do a high res render, it may run slower based on the fact that this card has fewer cores. But overall, this is a solid card and would have no problem running the software.

What is the actual dimensons of the card itself? I want to know so I can pin down a case.

To answer your question, it will work! But HDMI inherently has its limitation of 30fps so performance might not be as expected, gaming in 60fps. Ideally you want Display Port 1.2, 1.1 does not support 1080p with 60 fps AFAIK, so that you can get most out of your card.

Would these two cards be better in SLI mode than the ASUS Graphics Cards STRIX-GTX980-DC2OC-4GD5 or EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0 4GB GDDR5 Graphics Card?

in SLI mode, these MSi cards will beat a single or double asus strix gpu. they will also beat a single EVGA 980 SC, but not a double EVGA 980 SC because the EVGA has a higher clock speed.
