Favorite Poems Old and New: Selected For Boys and Girls

My friends and I read poetry from this book to meet a weekly requirement of my 4th grade teacher. I'm 75 now, and treasured this book so much that I was happy to find a new volume of the exact copy I had way back when. My original copy literally split in two, and the book boards were gone. But I knew exactly where to find it at a moment's notice.

This is simply the best book of poems for children ever. It has classic poetry, silly poems and limericks, seasonal and holiday poems, poems by famous authors such as J.R.R. Tolkien and Robert Graves, fairy poems, historical poems and ballads, animal poems, you name it. My brother and I had this book as kids, my kids loved this book, and now I have bought my grandson a copy. This book never grows old. I have looked at or purchased other anthologies and nothing else comes close. Makes a wonderful gift for a child who loves books and poetry.

I have loved this book for over 50 years. I bought it while in college because I love poetry. As my children grew, I would read to them at bedtime from this book. I would sit on the floor between the boys room and the girls room to read their favorites then a new one each evening. When they were grown and began having families of their own, I searched on amazon to see if by some chance it was still in print. It was! I bought five copies, one for each of my children. It was shipped directly to each of them. My oldest son, who was working in the publishing industry at the time, made a derogatory remark about the dust jacket but his wife was startled when he shouted, "It's the bedtime book!" He called me and left a message on the answering machine when he knew I would not be home. He read the entire Belinda poem much to the amusement of his wife. This copy was a gift for a good friend who will be caring for her grandchildren for a month this fall.

I am 60 years old but when I was a child my Mom would sit on the couch and me and my siblings would sit around her and she would read poems out of this book to us. My favorite was My Shadow but there are a lot of poems that I still remember from those happy days. I have made it a habit to give these books at baby showers and it has always been much appreciated.

My mother read this book to me when I was a toddler. "The Tale of Custer the Dragon" was a favorite. My sons have grown up hearing and then reading the poetry and every one of them have used this book in their various school projects. When they left home they each received a copy. I have the original that my mother read to me but it has been loved to death. There was a particular fall poem I wanted to read my youngest granddaughter who is 2 1/2 and realized it was time to get another one. I'm so happy I can order it here. She was just as delighted with Custer as I was. The imagery evoked by the poetry apparently lasts at least one lifetime.

The first one arrived and the binding was terrible. It looked like they forgot to add the glue to the binding tape. As soon as I opened the book, the top couple of pages and front cover separated from the rest of the book, held only by the binding tape (no visible glue). However, the return and replacement were hassle-free and handled very quickly. The new book does actually have a decent binding. The quality isn't up to the standards of other hardcover favorites in my personal library and I wonder how long this will really last, so I only gave 4 stars. The paper quality isn't bad, though. It's not too thin and seems to deal with handling well. So, overall, I am happy with the purchase and my kids are loving the poems that we read aloud each day.

WHEN MY BROTHER AND I WERE LITTLE OUR MOM BOUGHT THIS SAME BOOK OF FAVORITE POEMS OLD AND NEW BUT THE COVER WAS BROWNISH GRAY. AND HAD A DRAWING OF A BOY AND GIRL READING AT THEIR SCHOOL DESKS, BUT IT HAS A BRAND NEW COVER THE ILLUSTRATES IN THE BOOK ARE THE SAME ALL THE POEMS ARE THE SAME. WE LOVED OUR FIRST COPY OF IT TO DEATH WE HAD READ AND LOVED AND ENJOYED IT SO MUCH THAT THE OUTSIDE COVERS CAME OFF THAT ALL THAT WAS LEFT WAS THE BYING AND PAGES . WE KEPT THAT BOOK FOR OVER FIFTY YEARS. AND I HAD BEEN WANTING TO BUY A NEW COPY I HAD SEEN IT IN THE OLD B ROWN COVER AT TWO LOCAL BOOK STORES BUT FORGOT TO BUY IT. I AM SO VERY HAPPY TO FINALLY HAVE A NEW COPY OF IT.

An amazing book of poems, and the wife loved reading the poems to our grandchildren

Absolutely one of the greatest investments in our homeschool. Beautifully bound for many years of enjoyment. Well worth the money. There is a great variety of poems on may subjects for many different ages. I use it all the time to add poems to unit studies or for copy work. Use it for our younger kids but our junior high student still likes the poems too. This edition would especially appeal to those using Charlotte Mason.

My grand- mother and my mom had this book when I was a child. I spent hours reading - now I have my own copy to share with my grandeur- children. It’s hard to find something to take their focus off their devices, this book can do it!

My Mother got this book from a book subscription in the early 60s, and it was always special to me. I have thought many, many times of it through the years and have looked for it in every used book store I have visited. Finally decided to just buy a new copy. I have been driving my husband crazy by insisting he listen to me read my favorites! This book makes me happy!!! Thanks for getting it to me so promptly. "Wait, you have to hear this one too!!!" :)

This is a great book. Not every single poem is perfection but there are some real jewels in here. It would make a super gift. My kids love Custard the Cowardly Dragon and The Spider and The Fly and Jaberwock. I have a few of my own favorites.
