AVOID AKAI LIKE THE PLAGUE - THEY ADMIT FAULTS BUT WON'T REFUND
Edit (26/11/21)THREE consecutive units with same fault. Akai now admit they have either a faulty batch, or far more likely, an inherent fault on all units, but won't agree to refund me! I now have to copy in the retailer in the email thread and let them argue over who's going to sort this out for me. Staggeringly bad.Edit (11/11/21)Replacement finally arrived after I chased-up, and sure a enough, it's the wrong model. They send the cheaper non-DAB one with lower output. It's a real pity that Akai put their name one stuff like this, and subsidiary companies like the one I'm liaising with. I specifically asked, please check you sent the same model out. A customer spends time browsing, selecting a product, is it too much to ask that the company takes two minutes to double-check they're sending the right one? Piss poor.Edit (17/07/21)Akai responded in the end and said it sounds like the unit has a fault. What a pity they rushed out this product with such poor quality control and testing, I used to really respect Akai. And just to add, the non-DAB model has exactly the same inherent fault as the DAB one - the start of tracks momentarily fades in, it doesn't start at the set volume. Just absolute rubbish.Edit (28/4/21)Akai support stopped responding regarding what appears to be a design fault, as mentioned below, with the fade in on first song of a session/CD etc. That means it went through without testing, or knowingly released with a key fault. That's absolutely appalling. I still enjoy the unit though, ironically. The issues are not enough for me to need to return it.Edit (18/3/21):Strange bug whereby tracks fade in, so the very first half-second or so. I thought it might be only a Bluetooth issue but seems same for CD play. I've had an open query with Akai for several weeks now, and although they have twice politely sent a note saying it's being looked into, they should be able to respond as to whether it's a fault or not simply by testing.Original review:I was immediately interested as I like Akai, and first impressions, what a bargain! And I sense a very clever product, especially as Sony discontinued a popular model with similar features, for some reason. What Akai seem to have done is prioritised quality sound and feature range, made it look great, and save production costs via cheaper components (which work fine). The buttons and the featherlight remote do feel as lightweight as you can get, and I can imagine an SMS from my cleaner saying she's stuck a toe through the uber-thin speaker coverings, but the feature set is brilliant, its functionality is excellent, and most importantly it sounds fantastic. It's named as a micro system, but in my image, you can see the speakers relative to the PS4, they're not tiny, and they deliver enough volume for me in quite a large living room. I was amazed by the amount of bass, I'm actually having to EQ it down for some albums; there are several preset EQ options which are nice and varied, plus a customisable one which I haven't needed yet. Be sure to use the EQ as you can really tune these speakers if an album sounds off at all. I also use an equaliser extension in Chrome which is great when sending music via blutetooth. The bluetooth itself works flawlessly, which I find ironic as I sent back a Sonus a couple of years ago due to diabolical software and reliability of connection. There are both aux in and USB, and a top-loader CD player. And DAB/FM radios.I can't find fault; one has to understand build quality is quite lightweight but as mentioned, I believe they've prioritised sound and functionality whilst keeping it at a very competitive price. My unit is missing one of the rubber feet, it's a very minor thing; I'd also prefer an analogue volume dial but one mostly uses the remote anyway.I'm hoping this little powerhouse proves reliable (you get a three-year warranty though, which is great), because so far, I'm delighted with Akai's product here. Great job, Akai!

Product doesn’t work properly
On receipt of the CD player my husband tried to play one of his cds which plays perfectly well on his music centre but it just kept skipping, so as per your instructions we cleaned the lens but there was no improvement. We therefore wish to return the CD player and ask for a full refund. Could you please advise us as soon as possible how we can return this item.

cheap
Set up this stereo and opened the cd door once and it worked fine. Never opened the cd door again or moved it from where it was set up and then went to use it the next day and it says the cd door is open when it is not and will not work. Only had a week and used once now cant use it.

Fiddly to use
Have hooked the system to an existing pre-mounted set of speakers so cannot give a true answer on sound quality. However it plays well. The readout screen is difficult to see if the system is placed at lower levels. It is complicated and involved for setting up particularly for older persons. The remote is flimsy and doesn't give confidence for general protracted use. It also has too many buttons on it and is very small. For these reasons probably will not be fully tuning it in.The CD player cover open dimple is hard to see in poor light.

Instructions
You get what you pay for, a little tinny and the speaker cables 18 inches long! However increasing the cable length and placing the speakers behind furniture has produced a unit sounding as good as a much more expensive unit. Instructions on start up not very clear, don’t use remote use the buttons on the main unit.Worth the money if you make some speaker alterations.

Had to return to amazon
Don’t be fooled by the name this is not the Japanese company that produced quality hifi equipment, including excellent reel to reel tape recorders, of which I used to own one. That company went out of business in 2002, this is a Chinese imitation using the brand name (like MG cars). The quality of this product is poor, the plastics have a very cheap feel, the remote control in particular.I bought this to play CDs and stream via Bluetooth and these are the only features I used so cannot comment on the others. The CD player is not fit for purpose, it keeps pausing and jumping on discs that play perfectly well on my other hifi equipment. It is a lottery whether or not it will play a whole disc. As if that were not bad enough there was an annoying crackle/humming sound on quiet music passages, particularly when a track is fading out. This is very noticeable when listening via headphones. This sound does not come through on Bluetooth so I suspect is because the CD motor is not properly shielded.Other reviewers have commented on the jump in volume between certain settings. I also found this to be particularly annoying. The volume control on the unit clicks from one setting to another and is very difficult to turn. The remote control does adjust the volume more easily but the problem with the jump in volume is just the same. The overall sound quality is not bad for equipment costing £75, although that is not really saying very much.I made the mistake of buying this product based on the brand name, without doing proper research. Something I now regret.I would definitely not recommend this product.
