The Wild Laughter: Winner of the 2021 Encore Award

The most depressing book I’ve read this year
“Comic ingenuity” and “hilarious” - two points in the description above that have no right being there. This was recommended for my work book club, I didn’t laugh or even smile from the first to the last page of the book. It was compelling, and the writing poetic, but dear god I am glad to see the back of that book and move on to something less depressing.

Semi-demented but very good
Shades of Kevin Barry, Pat McCabe and Mike McCormack, mixing the heartfelt and the utterly gonzo, so rural Irish you can smell the silage

Nothing funny in this book at all. Desperate sad story .
