Q: Can I mix this with Shea butter or coconut oil instead of water?

Because glycolic acid is hydrophilic and very soluble in water, it will not dissolve well in hydrophobic carriers such as shea butter or coconut oil. However, it can be mixed in creams due to the fact that creams are basically emulsions with both water and oil components, and as such would dissolve and distribute in the water part of the cream. Of course, how well it mixes in creams probably will depend on how much water is in the cream/lotion and how much you're trying to add to it.

Q: Is mixing this just with water fine for use? Or does this need to be added to some special formula?

I add a teaspoon full of it to my face scrub that is in a 10 oz jar. I gently scrub it a few times a month because I have very oily acne-prone skin. Everyone's skin isn't the same so use it at your/physician's discretion. It works wonders for me.
