Antike II

Resource management, Area control, little bit of war all for victory points. It seems to start off slow, but it always seems like it's your turn. The turns go by very quick. No luck involved. This became an instant classic for me and will be a gateway board game into the finer board games of life for the people that like Risk and Monopoly.

Very happy for new game

This is a good Mac Gerdts game. It's missing a bit of the depth of his other games (e.g. Imperial) but this lighter game does have its place. I'd recommend this for experienced players trying to introduce newer players to the Rondelle game mechanic.

Tremendous, classic strategy game that holds its own even now, during the ongoing board game "renaissance".

Good buy

Make a spark, feed the fire, protect and spread it until your civilization wins the race for prestige. It starts off slow and uncaptivating but with a little gumption it builds into a storm. I love how every game plays radically different from such simple mechanics. Sometimes you get a tense civilization race while others you get an all out war. These characteristics might not satisfy some expectations but I find it fantastic. Nice mix of decisive resource conversion, area control, and clear objectives. Simple rules and didn't feel overly deep but there seems to be more underlying first and even second impressions. I'm doubtful it would be good with 3 players but any more is great. It may be possible to restrict cities for 3. A side plus, the game even smells good! What's up with that? Usually they have a funny chemical smell but this smells like a library with leather Bibles and a hint of warm copying paper.

Simple to learn, with plenty of layers. It's a fun, shortish game, but lacks a little umph to make it an awesome game.

It's a great game. I think this 2nd edition is better than the original with the streamlining of the rules. If you have never played Antike it is an excellent mini civilisation building strategy game. The rules are not too complicated so easy to play with family member and friends. But the clever mechanics, lack of luck and strategic possibilities make this a great game for serious board gamers as well. There is war and conquest but mostly it is a game about building your own civilisation whilst making sure your opponents don't get ahead. Strong defences and the threat of conflict are often better than a costly war with your neighbours. Good, clever fun!
