Standard Motor Products SS581 Solenoid

This solenoid will not be a direct replacement for lawn mowers in general, although some mowers somewhere might use one of these. This will be a direct replacement for many old Ford starter relays from about '65 to '95 well the good old days. If you use the relay for a modification, remember the 'S' terminal is where to put the trigger wire or start wire from the ignition switch, or momentary switch. This is not good enough for constant duty, not designed for that (hours and hours). The other terminal 'I' is meant to bypass the ballast resistor, or resistor wire for ignition systems from the Good Old Days when the relay is on and sends jumped power or ground however it is wired out. When the relay is off, the terminal is inert. The mounting bracket is the ground for the relay pull in coil inside the relay body. This needs to be understood if used on a positive ground vehicle like an Oliver 770 tractor or something wonderful like that. This solenoid stuck on when first used. Believe just a fluke and have ordered another from the same company.

This product is larger and beefier than the oem part I replaced, Seems well made. Worked just fine, and a perfect fit. Time will tell if it holds up. I am not going to give it a negative review simply because it's made in China.

Definitely better than the standard units I used to get from the local AP store. You can feel the heft and the studs do not move like the others did right out of the box (sometimes).

So far it appears to be the same quality as original equipment. the original lasted 40 years though and still function okay except for electrical corrosion on the battery connection

Typically Standard products are really good, maybe I just got a defective one out of the box. But the one I received was electrically shorted internally. After I hooked it up and upon connecting the battery the starter would engage even though the keys were in my pocket. I ended up going with an OEM Ford solenoid and had no further issues.

I used this relay to replace a failed glow plug relay on my tractor. Easy to install and works like a charm.
