the Publisher should be ashamed
I used this in a class I taught, but will not do so again. It is the complete Aiken playscript. But nothing more. No introduction, no context or production history. There's a list of characters, but with absolutely no descriptions (readers who are new to this story will be unsure whether some characters are black or white--it matters in this play). Most disappointing, though, is that the text has simply been lifted from Guttenburg or the terrific Univ. of Virginia website devoted to this play without any basic editing. Separated hyphenated words (from some other original format) appear in the middle of these printed lines. Stage directions (important in a melodrama like this) are weirdly double-bracketed, not italicized. Asides to the audience are only sometimes indicated. Dodo Press has just cut&pasted Aiken's text into their book's pages.
