Haven’t tried it yet but seems to be right for 4-5 year old child.

how many cubes are there?

There are 8 letter cubes also & 30 picture/word cards -each card has a 3 letter word on one side and a 4 letter words on the opposite side = a total of 60 words. Appropiate for ages 3+

Is it true that there are some words that can't be spelled b/c two letters are on one cube??

Tough question without pulling out the game and looking at each card and arranging the cubes for each one. If Hasbro did their play testing correctly, it should be possible to spell all the words on the cards provided. If not, you'll have a fun learning opportunity to explain how things work with your children. Best of luck.

Are the word cards thick as original Jr Boggle?

They seem a little thicker than regular playing cards, but not like thicker cardboard type. I do not know Jr. Boggle card type.
