to me this is the best overall summary book for south pacific navigation and nautical heritage,but for those who wish more info or greater or more focused details see my other reviews for similar books. read this book first and then move on to the others.

Die wohl für uns erreichbare einzige Darstellung des Seewesens bei den Bewphnern der Südsee-Inseln. Endlich eine profunde Darstellung, wie die dort lebenden Völker es geschafft haben, sich bei aller Einfachheit ihrer Mittel, die See zu erschließen und auch zu beherrschen; cum grano salis.

Excellent bouquin, même pour les non spécialistes. Il faut s'accrocher un peu quand même, et ne pas s'astreindre à tout lire...Plaira aux passionnés d'ethnologie, de voyages, ou de voile !
