Is this really it?
Given that the author is a consultant to a Parliamentary committee on broadcasting this book has some importance. However, I was rather taken aback when I read it (and I read it thoroughly). It is certainly not what I expected. This is largely a compendium of other people's work and, as as far I can see, contains no actual research of its own. It is in all aspects rather thin with only 135 pages of actual text and largely reads like a series of Powerpoints where there are continual recalls to outlines of previous chapters and unrevealing conclusions.Who is it aimed at? I read the first fifty pages without coming across anything new . Is it for secondary schools? University students? But their students would know a great deal of this because it is, and there is no way getting away from this, rather banal and boringly basic. Hugely descriptive, I didn't see any real theory here, just summations of what terms mean and what others have said about them.Nothing is more obviously true than the author's own statement that she is not 'a particularly avid television viewer'. That is very clear from reading this book
