Hi. These are dark brown, but are dark enough to work okay with black as well. To me, they don't blend well with gray.

Q: will they hold a ponytail?

This size will definitely not hold a ponytail. They are small and will only hold a small section of hair. If you put too much hair in, they will break. They are not flexible.
