A Nice Step Up from the Blu-Ray
The Blu-Ray always looked good, but this 4K UHD looks even better. If you're a fan of the film then the upgrade is worth it.

Classic western
Classic Eastwood but my 4k uhd film lost the sound at 1minute 31 seconds plus a little film break up.I gave the disc a good clean and the sound was OK after 1-33 and was OK until the end.

4K absolute transformation
Just received the 4K version from Amazon after a long delay in release by the distributor and watched in two sittings via a LG G1 oled large screen with full home theatre surround system. Firstly there is virtually no grain in the images. Amazing picture quality and definitely worth the price and yet another copy for the library. Movie is definitely more outwardly violent than his spaghetti trilogy which had underlying humour even if black. This doesn’t. Having loved the 4k transformation ,on reflection not sure I will watch this regularly hence four stars only. Ron

NEW BLU-RAY TRANSFER FOR HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER DOES LOOK BEAUTIFUL, BETTER THAN THE DVD RELEASE FOR SURE,
One of my favourite Clint Eastwood westernsit's Classic atmospheric Thriller in the Western genre, very errie film with a touch of the Supernatural like a Ghost story in the westthat's how i see the filmwell written script, well actored and well Directedif you want the plot of the film go to wikipedia.comthis review is about the difference between the DVD release and this new blu-ray releasei have the DVD release from 2002 which has an average widescreen transfer in Dolby digital sound only but hardly no extras at allthe special features are Production notes and Theatrical trailer that's it.Now Universal has re-issued this film as a 40th Anniversary edition blu-raywell i expect a 40th Anniversary edition to have all new extras like a Documentary or featurette.this new Blu-ray release has no new special features at all, just a Theatrical trailerso i took a risk and bought it for $11 on amazon.comcause on the back cover it says the movie has been restored and remasteredso when i got it i watch the film a bit just to check out the qualitythe new blu-ray transfer for the picture quality is beautiful i must sayi was stunned and amazed on how Good it looks in 2:35:1 widescreenmuch much better clearer picture quality than the 2002 dvd releaseUniversal really did make the effort to clean up the picture quality for surenot much Grain on this blu-rayplus the Audio quality has been boosted up for sure, a new 5.1 master audio mixmuch better than the Dolby Digital sound from the dvdit's tragic that Universal didn't make the effort with the special features at allthey cleaned up the picture quality for sure but didn't bother giving new special featureswhich is very disapointing and pathetic i'm a big fan of this filmwhat's the point advertising this new blu-ray as a 40th Anniversary edition when you get no new extrasthere should be at least a new interview with Clint Eastwood or an Audio commentaryfor fans like myself this new blu-ray is only Good to Upgrade from your dvd releasecause as i said the blu-ray transfer does look stunning and amazing, not much Grain at alland the sound quality is boosted to 5.1 master audioif you have the old dvd release, scrap ittime to upgrade to this new blu-ray release worth paying $11 for it off amazonbut Universal shouldn't have advertised it as 40th anniversary edition cause it isn't in my opinionthere are no new special features, so fans like myself should not be misleadedbut the blu-ray transfer is excellent thoui gave this blu-ray 4 stars based on the new picture quality transfer

Not What You're Expecting
So, this is a .... Supernatural Horror Comedy Western?"High Plains Drifter" is a really odd film with an ambiguous ending open to many interpretations. The Basics: A mysterious stranger happens upon the small town of Lago, a settlement beside a lake somewhere out west. All he wants is a drink, a shave, and a bath, but the three amateur bad-asses hired to protect the town make him feel unwelcome so he shoots them. The townspeople recognize that this mysterious stranger is The Ultimate Bad-Ass and convince him to stay and protect them from a trio of nasty guys who hold a grudge against the town and are being released from prison soon. But it's actually much weirder than that.It looks like a pretty standard Western, but the music tells you this is a supernatural horror. There are moments of levity followed by very uncomfortable scenes of a brutal rape that goes on and on and on (and the victim ends up enjoying herself). There's also an intense murder scene where three men whip the town's previous Sheriff to death in the middle of the street, and it also goes on and on and on.It's all very well done and entertaining if you like oddball movies (like I do). My only real complaint is that the town looked like a movie set. It didn't look lived in at all. There weren't enough homes to account for everyone, and some of the business buildings were ridiculously small. It was set way too close to the water, and there was no plant life anywhere around the settlement.Or was that all on purpose? It certainly adds to the dreamlike / nightmarish atmosphere of the film.In any case it's well worth watching.

They asked him to protect the town and he turned it into a blood red living Hell !
I first saw "High Plains Drifter" in the theater soon after it was released in the summer of 1973.I was 17 at the time. Well I'm 64 now and I got it on DVD and I appreciate it even more. This was only the second movie Clint Eastwood had directed,("Play Misty For Me" in 1971 was his first,) and he did a really good job. This is what they called a revisionist Western. Ernest Tidyman who created the first black Private Detective "John Shaft" and won the "Oscar" for Best Screenplay for "The French Connection" in 1971 wrote this. Dean Riesner who co-wrote "Coogan's Bluff" from 1968,"Play Misty for Me","Dirty Harry" from 1971,"Charley Varrick" from 1973 and "The Enforcer" from 1976 and also wrote the teleplay for the great mini-series "Rich Man, Poor Man" in 1976 ,(which made Nick Nolte a star.) He had an uncredited hand in rewriting the screenplay for "High Plains Drifter." It features fine cinematography from Bruce Surtees who also worked on "Play Misty For Me" and "Dirty Harry" and another great Western "The Outlaw Josey Wales" from 1976. Dee Barton created an effective score ,kinda eerie. Mono Lake in Northern,California near Sierra is the setting in a small mining town called Lago. A tagline for one of the ads read "They asked him to protect the town and He turned it into a blood red living Hell !"

'IS THE PRICE TOO HIGH ?
This is screen legend 'Clint Eastwood's' second movie as a director.in this he plays his familiar role as the gunman with no name ridinginto town to raise 'HELL !'after a long ride he arrives in 'LAGO' all he appears to want is aquiet drink, a shave and a bath, however three gun-toting locals haveno intention of allowing the stranger to do so.the problem is soon resolved.the town has another issue looming, they need to hire a gun to protectthem against three gunmen they'd had put away who are now being releasedfrom prison, the sheriff isn't up to the job, there's only one candidate, the stranger, who unbeknown to the town folk has his own agenda.are they are willing to agree to all his demands ?The man with no-name demands that they prepare to welcome the gunmen andtells them what they need to do.but...when it comes too, have they the courage to do so ?though not his best western it is typical in as much as he plays thepart of the stranger with a swift draw.some gritty action sequences....a must for 'Clint Eastwood' fans.Pleased to say that unlike many of the 'Blu-ray' transfers of his filmsthe picture quality is superior to many of his recent Blu-ray' releasesI've purchased.

HIGH PRAISE
Clint Eastwood's avenging angel rides into a town wracked with guilt over the brutal murder of the town's sheriff at the hands of 3 killers. The killers are on their way back to the town so they need someone to protect them. This is possibly my favourite western of all time. Saddle up, you'll be glad you did.

Paint it red
Excellent edition of High Plains Drifter which is still one of the best westerns that Clint directed himself. Very crisp picture for such an old movie and well worth what i paid for it 10/10.
