What is the difference between a five hole flute and a six hole flute?

Excellent question. Basically the five hole flute is the same as the six hole, minus hole number four. The five hole plays a mode one minor pentatonic scale. The six hole flute will play the same mode one scale, you just keep hole number four covered. The six hole will also play a mode four minor pentatonic scale by keeping hole number three covered. Simply put, the six hole gives you a second, slightly different scale. The truth is, you can actually play both scales on a five hole flute using different fingering methods.
