Q: I repaired a 5" hole in rotted deck porch step, it is still drying. Will my step hold up and do I have to seal it before painting it?

If you are able to clamp a board under the repaired hole and use gorilla original glue and follow directions where are you wet one piece of wood And the glue to the other and clamp it it’ll hold. It depends on what kind of paint you’re using as to whether have to seal it or not. Oil base paint I think not. This is just an opinion

Q: How is this product different from the "stuff" with the same name in the can?

From an amateur furniture maker: appears to be the same 'stuff' as the Plastic Wood used for decades, but the indicator is more useful than guessing if that deeper hole is sandable yet.

It will dry again but it will not have the integrity of virgin filler.
