Like sitting with a very wise person discussing life!
"As you look around you, notice that no two people have identical lives. Some people seem to have it all: life goes their way. Others struggle and never seem to get their act together. Is it just luck or an act of God that disease and loneliness are "dished out" to some while others receive health and happiness? You may not have discovered it yet, but life is not "fair". Yet life is "just". Your life is in your hands. The power is there. The potential is there waiting for you to direct it" ~ Terry Cole WhittakerThis book has been around since the 70s and is chock full of wisdom on how to break through the limiting thoughts that can stifle your life. Part of the process of reclaiming your life is recognizing these limiting beliefs that are so entrenched that they seem "normal". Honestly, I wish I had discovered this book when it was first published. However, things tend to happen when they are supposed to. When the student is ready….There are helpful self awareness exercises throughout the book that help to process the material in this book. It is like sitting down with a wise person and discussing every aspect of life, or taking an empowering seminar with many valuable epiphanies. This book can help you in your quest to take back your power and your life!

one of the best books ever...I think I have bought ten copies!
I have bought and given out so many of these books....they are wonderful for young and old people alike, who are trying to realign themselves and see their own worth, and strike out on another path. Knowing what you are good at, and what makes you a unique person is integral to Terri Cole's teaching, and she does a cheerleader good job of making you see your own worth, while weaving in stories of her own. I recognize that she began as christian, and shares many of those values...I am not, but I aligned with everything she said.

As recommended - a good read
This book was recommended by my pastor. Contends that being a bit egocentric can be good, I'm not certain that I can agree completely but it does make a case for being one's own person. According to her, many of us strive for other's approval instead of our own. As some of my friends say: "Show up, speak your own truth and detach from the outcome". Easier said than done.

Decent book, but too religious and biased
An alright book, but honestly not what I expected it to be. It's filled with bias and generalizations, none of which are backed up by any surveys or tests. Her beliefs on many topics and issues in life tend to be very linear and simplistic, often times to the point of inaccuracy. It's a very Christian book, which I don't mind, but to keep mentioning "God is the truth and the answer" and that "life is a limitless resource through the Spirit" makes me question her credibility.

Great!
I have been keeping this by my bed stand and reviewing it in the morning a few pages each day. It has thought exercises to work through at the end of each chapter, and even though its an older book the content is still way applicable to energy and personal power. For the price on Amazon it can't be beat either!

Will probably not enjoy if not practicing Christian
If you are not a practicing Christian you are unlikely to enjoy this book. I respect the value system that Christianity espouses (though it does not always practice it) and the right of everyone to their beliefs, but God is a justification for too many things here.

I love the title of this book (and the book itself
I love the title of this book (and the book itself, too)! My wife and I heard Terry Cole-Whitaker speak in Honolulu umpteen years ago; she is an impressive, inspiring, and assertive speaker and writer.

A practical mantra
The title says it all. If you can live by this canon, you will become truly self-actualized.Whittaker has generated some unflattering press, and I am not a religious follower. However, here she puts forth a universally applicable and workable formula to change the way you live your life. This concept is as difficult to implement as it is simple to state. To the extent that you can live your life this way, you will obtain real autonomy in your dealings with other people. The effect on your personal and professional life cannot be underestimated. It takes great courage, and real persistence to change lifelong conditioning. However, there is no more important challenge than the quest for genuine personal freedom.

This is an old book but the content is invaluable. One of the best self help books I have read.If you are the sort of person that feels guilty for saying no, suffers from anxiety and depression, this book offers helpful suggestions on how to change your perspective and also how to deal with people better.
