Q: Are these really long, and if so, does anyone know where to find some that aren't so long?

out of package they were nice length, after first washing these shirts shrunk to kids size almost, I was very unhappy with these shirts

Q: What does mean the abbreviation of a and l ? and are there any other abbreviations with hanes?

A-shirts is an expression that goes way back: used to mean Athletic shirts, as opposed to T-shirts. This was before anyone called the sleeveless version Tank shirts.

Q: Why would you have a size chart that is waist size only for under shirts???

I don't know the why of it, but I can tell you that it comes out accurate.
